Corfu, March 10 – Roadworks have officially begun in the Perama area of Corfu, marking a significant step in the Ionian Islands Regional Authority’s commitment to improving the island’s road infrastructure. The project, which includes asphalt paving and slope stabilization, aims to enhance road safety and create a modern road network for residents and visitors alike.

Regional Governor Oversees Project Launch

The commencement of the works was attended by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Ioannis Trepeklis, accompanied by the Deputy Regional Governor for Technical Works and Planning, Giorgos Mamalos, and regional service executives. During their visit, they received an on-site briefing on the progress and timeline of the interventions.

These interventions encompass not only asphalt paving but also crucial slope stabilization works in areas prone to landslides. Furthermore, leveling asphalt pavings are planned to reinforce overall road safety across the network.

Commitment to a Modern Road Network

Regional Governor Trepeklis emphasized the long-term vision behind these projects, stating, “Until today, interventions and restorations have been carried out at this point of the road network. Now, the creation of a new, modern infrastructure begins.” This statement underscores the authority’s dedication to moving beyond temporary fixes to establish a durable and safe road system.

The current project is an integral part of the Ionian Islands Regional Authority’s comprehensive strategy to upgrade the road network throughout Corfu, thereby improving the safety and efficiency of transportation across the island.

Future Works and Local Impact

It has been noted that asphalt paving will also extend to Vryonis once the works by DEYAK (Corfu Water and Sewerage Company) are completed in that area, indicating a coordinated effort to minimize disruption and maximize the impact of the upgrades.

The local community has shown interest in these developments, with discussions arising regarding the quality and longevity of the works. Concerns have been raised by some residents about the thoroughness of the paving process, suggesting that older layers of asphalt should be removed before new ones are laid to ensure durability. However, the Regional Authority maintains its commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure.

Public Engagement and Information

The Regional Authority encourages public engagement and transparency regarding ongoing projects. Information about the progress of these works, as well as other regional developments, is regularly updated through official channels and local news outlets.

This initiative is expected to significantly benefit daily commuters and the tourism sector, which relies heavily on well-maintained infrastructure. Improved roads will facilitate smoother travel, reduce accident risks, and enhance the overall experience for everyone on the island.

The Ionian Islands Regional Authority continues to plan and execute projects aimed at sustainable development and improved quality of life for all its inhabitants.
