Corfu, June 4 – The Port Authority of Corfu was informed last night that the Belize-flagged passenger ferry ‘CORFU EXPRESS’ experienced a malfunction in its starboard main engine while performing its scheduled route from Corfu port to Saranda port in Albania.
Ferry Returns to Corfu with Assistance
The vessel returned to the port of Corfu with the assistance of the tugboat ‘SOUDA II’ (N.P. 8103) and escorted by a Coast Guard patrol boat. All 76 passengers on board were safely disembarked.
Passengers Transferred to Another Vessel
Following their safe disembarkation, the passengers were subsequently transferred to their intended destination using another passenger ferry. There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident, nor was any marine pollution observed.
Departure Prohibited Until Repairs Complete
The Central Port Authority of Corfu has prohibited the departure of the ‘CORFU EXPRESS’ until the damage is repaired and a relevant certificate of seaworthiness is provided by the attending classification society.
This incident highlights the importance of regular maintenance and safety protocols for maritime transport, especially for vessels operating on busy routes between popular tourist destinations like Corfu and Saranda.
