The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands has announced the successful completion of its hypertension awareness and prevention campaign, which took place on May 19 and 20, 2026. The initiative, organized by the KEP Health Center of the Municipality in collaboration with the Corfu Health Center and under the auspices of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Preventive Medicine Programs, aimed to provide substantial health benefits to citizens.
Campaign Activities and Citizen Engagement
During the two-day event, free blood pressure measurements were offered to participants. Crucially, attendees were also educated on the correct procedures for home blood pressure monitoring to ensure the reliability of their results. Additionally, a special form for weekly blood pressure recording was distributed, and appointments were scheduled with the 1st Local Health Team (TOMY) for further re-evaluation and ongoing monitoring.
Key Findings from the Campaign
The collected data highlights the significance of such preventive interventions. Out of all participating citizens (69% women and 31% men), the following results were observed:
- 12% of participants were immediately referred for further medical evaluation and follow-up.
- 25% of participants received specialized recommendations and advice on adopting healthy habits and systematic blood pressure monitoring.
- The majority of the remaining participants recorded normal blood pressure values.
Furthermore, citizens who had recent blood tests received an assessment of their overall cardiovascular risk, an evaluation of their adherence to medication with instructions for more effective management of any difficulties, and a record of co-morbidities, along with personalized recommendations for adopting healthy dietary habits.
The Importance of Prevention in Hypertension
The primary goal of this initiative was to raise public awareness about the early management of arterial hypertension. This condition is one of the most common chronic diseases and a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Often presenting without symptoms, it is characterized as a “silent disease.”
Hypertension becomes more prevalent with age and is associated with heredity, obesity, smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise, making early diagnosis critical for protecting lives. The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands continues to consistently invest in prevention and public health promotion activities, enhancing public awareness and access to essential care services.
This initiative underscores the municipality’s commitment to proactive healthcare and empowering its citizens with the knowledge and tools to manage their health effectively. The success of this campaign is a testament to the collaborative efforts of local health authorities and the active participation of the community.
