Corfu Chamber of Commerce Demands Reassessment of Halikounas Beach’s ‘Untouched’ Status

Corfu, June 3, 2026 – The Corfu Chamber of Commerce has officially called for a re-evaluation of the ‘Untouched Beach’ designation for Halikounas Beach. This resolution, issued yesterday, supports the position of the Ionian Islands Region, advocating for a balanced management framework that addresses environmental protection alongside local economic and social needs.

The Chamber’s decision follows extensive discussions, including the 13th Regular Session of the Ionian Islands Regional Council on May 17, 2026, and a resolution from the South Corfu Municipality on May 25, 2026. Public interventions and calls for a review of the area’s management framework have also influenced the Chamber’s stance.

Environmental Protection vs. Economic Viability

Halikounas Beach, adjacent to Lake Korission and part of a protected Natura ecosystem, holds significant environmental, ecological, and aesthetic value. The Chamber acknowledges the critical need to preserve this natural wealth and its sensitive ecosystems as a prerequisite for sustainable local development.

However, the Chamber argues that the current absolute and horizontal restrictions, which prohibit even mild and environmentally compatible low-impact activities, are creating severe dysfunctions in the social and economic life of the region. These restrictions negatively affect local entrepreneurship, tourism, and the ability to serve both residents and visitors.

Impact on Local Economy and Services

Specifically, the complete prohibition of organized use on Halikounas Beach has led to several issues:

  • Significant limitations on safe and efficient visitor services.
  • A lack of basic infrastructure and services.
  • Adverse effects on professionals and businesses legally operating in the area.
  • Negative consequences for the local economy and the developmental prospects of South Corfu.

The Chamber emphasizes that while environmental protection is paramount, the current framework hinders the region’s ability to thrive sustainably. Local businesses, particularly those reliant on tourism, are struggling to adapt to the stringent regulations.

Proposal for a Sustainable Management Framework

The Corfu Chamber of Commerce advocates for the development of a special framework for mild and sustainable management of the area. This proposed framework would:

  • Effectively protect the natural environment and sensitive ecosystem.
  • Allow for mild forms of organized activity under strict environmental conditions.
  • Ensure the smooth operation of the area for the benefit of residents and visitors.
  • Promote a model of sustainable tourism development that respects Corfu’s natural and cultural identity.

This approach aims to strike a balance between conservation and the practical needs of the local community, fostering a tourism model that is both environmentally responsible and economically viable.

Call for Dialogue and Reconsideration

For these reasons, the Corfu Chamber of Commerce calls upon the relevant Ministries and competent authorities to:

  • Immediately reconsider the current status of Halikounas Beach.
  • Engage in substantial dialogue with local government, productive bodies, and the local community.
  • Formulate a realistic and functional framework for the protection and utilization of the area, combining environmental preservation with social and economic sustainability.

The Chamber hopes that through open communication and collaboration, a solution can be found that safeguards Corfu’s natural beauty while supporting its vibrant local economy.
