Corfu, February 12 – Regional and municipal leaders in Corfu convened yesterday to address critical waste management issues and to strategize on increasing recycling rates across the island, with a particular focus on preparations for the impending tourist season. The meeting, held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, was chaired by the Governor of the Ionian Islands, Giannis Trepeklis, and included the three Mayors of the Corfu Regional Unit: Stefanos Poulimenos (Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands), Giorgos Macheimaris (North Corfu), and Giannis Kavvadias (South Corfu), along with Deputy Mayors and executives from the Ionian Islands Waste Management Body (FoDSA).

Waste Management a Top Priority for Tourist Season

Governor Trepeklis emphasized that infrastructure issues, particularly recycling, are an absolute priority for both the Region and the Municipalities, especially with the tourist season approaching. He highlighted that the contractor for the waste management plant has already been appointed, topographical work has commenced, and the geotechnical study has been completed. This signifies a concrete step towards modernizing Corfu’s waste disposal capabilities.

Joint Action Plan Agreed Upon

During the meeting, a common framework of actions for the coming period was agreed upon. This plan places significant emphasis on source-separated recycling and improving waste collection services. Governor Trepeklis announced that targeted meetings will follow with the hotel sector, supermarket chains, and catering establishments. The aim is to foster cooperation to enhance the effectiveness of the system and to reduce the high cost of waste transportation, which currently burdens local authorities.

A crucial aspect of the strategy is the need for an extensive public awareness campaign. This campaign aims to mobilize both citizens and professionals to participate more actively in recycling efforts. As the Governor stressed, an increase in recycling directly translates into cost savings for the Municipalities and provides additional funding for new, necessary infrastructure that will benefit local communities. This highlights the economic and environmental benefits of a robust recycling program.

Upgrading Management Facilities and Inter-Municipal Cooperation

Governor Trepeklis, in his capacity as President of FoDSA, also underscored the upgrade of waste management facilities. He noted that, following consultation with the Mayors, the operational framework is being substantially organized and improved. The goal is to achieve qualitative and sustainable solutions for all the Ionian Islands, ensuring a consistent and effective approach to waste management across the region.

The Governor further emphasized that cooperation between the Region and the Municipalities, along with the coordination of Local Government with the business community and citizens, is a strategic choice. This collaborative approach is seen as a vital lever for environmental protection and economic sustainability for the islands, ensuring that waste management becomes a cornerstone of sustainable development.

The Broader Context: Ionian Islands and Greece

This initiative on Corfu is part of a broader effort across the Ionian Islands to enhance environmental sustainability. The region faces unique challenges due to its island geography and significant tourism influx. Effective waste management is crucial not only for environmental protection but also for maintaining the aesthetic appeal that attracts millions of tourists annually. The emphasis on recycling at the source and public engagement reflects a modern approach to environmental governance, aligning with broader European Union directives on waste reduction and circular economy principles.

The discussions and agreements reached in Corfu represent a proactive stance by local authorities to tackle a persistent issue that affects both the quality of life for residents and the attractiveness of the island as a tourist destination. The successful implementation of these plans will serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
