Corfu, February 12, 2026 – The Ionian Islands Region is embarking on a strategic initiative to penetrate the rapidly growing Indian tourism market, with a strong emphasis on Corfu as the central hub. This move follows a working meeting between the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepekli, and Angelos Tsavdaris, President of the Hellenic-Indian Chamber of Commerce, along with Georgia Korakaki, the Chamber’s Modernization Consultant responsible for Greece-India relations.
Strategic Expansion into New Tourism Markets
Governor Trepekli highlighted the Region’s consistent investment in opening up to new, high-potential markets. He emphasized the importance of capitalizing on recent developments in air connections between Greece and India and the significant increase in travel demand from India. Indian travelers have shown particular interest in culture, a clear comparative advantage for the Ionian Islands, given their rich historical footprint, monuments, cultural routes, and Heptanesian tradition.
Targeted Promotion and Collaborations
In the immediate future, a structured invitation will be extended to Indian travel agents and journalists to visit the Ionian Islands. This initiative, in collaboration with local chambers and stakeholders, aims to showcase the region’s unique advantages, including its culture, gastronomy, quality local products, and distinct island identity.
The Regional Governor also underscored the importance of the Region’s institutional extroversion. He announced that the Ionian Islands plan to participate in tourism exhibitions in India at a later stage, with the goal of establishing stable channels for cooperation and promotion.
Cricket Tourism: A Unique Gateway to the Indian Market
Special emphasis was placed on sports tourism as a crucial lever for attracting the Indian market. During the meeting, it was confirmed that in April, in cooperation with the Cricket Federation based in Corfu, the island will host six cricket teams from India. These teams will participate in exhibition matches of India’s national sport, which also holds a place in Corfiot tradition. This event is expected to enhance the international visibility of the region and create new opportunities for thematic tourism.
Industry Endorsement and Future Prospects
The President of the Hellenic-Indian Chamber of Commerce noted that visits by Indian tourism professionals to Corfu are being prepared. He described the collaboration with the Ionian Islands Region as a catalyst for developing quality visitor flows and promoting Greek products and the cultural identity of the Ionian Islands.
This comprehensive strategy aims to diversify the Ionian Islands’ tourism portfolio and attract a new demographic of visitors, further solidifying the region’s position as a premier European destination.
