In a significant achievement for Greek sports, Corfu’s own Georgia Argyrou and Feli Kavvada clinched a silver medal at the 2026 World Cheerleading Championship. The prestigious event took place from April 22-24 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, USA, attracting top talent from around the globe.
Historic Success for Greece in Cheerleading
The two athletes, who began their cheerleading journey with the ‘Seirenes’ club in Corfu, now compete under the banner of the ‘Aposperides’ club of Nea Smyrni. Their outstanding performance in the Senior Hip Hop category not only brought them individual glory but also contributed to a historic moment for Greece in the sport.
This year’s championship marked the first time Greece has ever won a silver medal at the World Cheerleading Championship, and remarkably, the first time the country has secured two world medals at a single event. This success underscores Greece’s growing prominence on the global cheerleading stage and bodes well for future competitions.
The Path to Silver: Overcoming Global Competitors
The ‘Aposperides’ Senior Hip Hop team, featuring Argyrou and Kavvada, delivered a stunning performance. Despite placing 6th in the semi-finals, they managed to surpass formidable teams from countries such as Ecuador, Thailand, Australia, and Mexico to claim the second position worldwide. The gold medal in this category went to the USA, with Ecuador taking home the bronze.
The first silver medal for Greece was earned by the Junior All Girl Advanced team, comprised of athletes from the ‘Hellenic Star’ club in Thessaloniki. In their category, Canada secured the gold, and Poland finished with the bronze.
Official Recognition and Future Aspirations
The medals were presented by Evangelia Kritikou, head of national teams and a board member of the Hellenic Cheerleading Federation. Michalis Fountedakis, President of the Hellenic Cheerleading Federation, expressed immense pride in the athletes’ accomplishments.
“You have made us proud! The two silver medals represent another great success for our country. The high level and continuous upward trend in the sport of cheerleading are confirmed by Greece’s presence on the medal podium every year. Equally important are the distinctions of all teams and pairs in the 2026 World Cheerleading Championship. Warm congratulations to all athletes, coaches, and members of the mission who worthily represented Greece in Orlando,” stated Fountedakis.
