On Track in Athens: Inside the Urban Spirit of Greatness Athens

The light hits differently in Athens at seven in the morning. It’s sharp, unflinching, the kind of light that reveals everything – the graffiti on marble walls, coffee cups left on ancient steps, the runners circling Panathenaic Stadium before the city fully wakes. This is the Athens that Vicky Kaya knows. This is the Athens she wanted to capture.

On a late October morning in 2025, as the city shifts from summer’s relentless heat to autumn’s softer embrace, Greatness Athens unveiled its most ambitious campaign yet. Not in a sterile showroom or a borrowed gallery space, but in the streets – on actual running tracks, in neighborhoods where streetwear isn’t a trend but a language, where style is survival and self-expression combined into one.

The Philosophy: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Attitude

“We don’t just make clothes,” Kaya tells me, standing near a track in central Athens, watching models move through their paces. She’s wearing the collection herself – a striped long-sleeve top in ecru and blue, loose-fitting track pants, white sneakers that have clearly been worn, not just styled. “We’re translating something that’s been in the DNA of this city for thousands of years.”

That something is ευ αγωνίζεσθαι – the ancient Greek principle of competing with honor, of striving not just to win but to excel with integrity. In Greatness Athens’s interpretation, it becomes transparency, authenticity, that hard-to-define cool attitude that can’t be manufactured or bought.

The second pillar is equally ancient: νους υγιής εν σώματι υγιεί – a sound mind in a sound body. But Kaya isn’t interested in the gym-bro take on this maxim. For her, it’s about balance. It’s about focusing on what actually matters. It’s self-care as philosophy, not hashtag.

“In Athens right now, there’s this incredible energy,” she explains, gesturing toward the city sprawling around us. “People are building things, creating things, despite everything. The economic crisis, the pandemic, all of it. There’s this resilience. This refusal to give up. That’s what greatness really is.”

The Collection: Where the Track Meets the Street

The ‘Greatness on Track’ collection is the brand’s most complete offering to date. Every piece draws inspiration from the running track – not as nostalgia, but as metaphor. The starting line. The hurdles. The finish that’s also another beginning.

The signature element? Horizontal stripes in ecru, blue, pink, and black-and-white – a direct, unapologetic reference to track lanes. But these aren’t athletic stripes in the traditional sense. They’re softer, more refined, designed to work just as easily with vintage denim and leather jackets as with the collection’s own track pants.

There are leggings and sports bras that actually work for movement, not just Instagram. Sweatshirts and hoodies cut with contemporary, relaxed silhouettes that reject the tight, body-conscious look that dominated athleisure for the past decade. Long-sleeve and short-sleeve tees featuring the brand’s distinctive logo, designed to layer, to live in, to really wear.

“We wanted pieces that work for running at six a.m. and meeting friends for coffee at noon,” says one of the designers, Maria, who’s been with the brand since its early days. “Athens doesn’t do separate wardrobes. We move too fast. We need clothes that move with us.”

The Shoot: Real City, Real Movement

The campaign was shot entirely in Athens, across multiple locations that reflect the city’s layered identity. An actual running track in Kallithea. The streets of Metaxourgeio, where street art covers every available surface. The marble steps near Syntagma, where ancient and modern collide every single day.

The models aren’t the usual suspects. There’s Dimitris, a twenty-four-year-old graphic designer who runs marathons. Sofia, a dancer who teaches contemporary movement to kids in Exarchia. Alexandros, who works in tech but spends his weekends playing basketball on neighborhood courts.

“We didn’t want people who just look good in clothes,” Kaya explains. “We wanted people who embody this idea of being on track. People who know where they’re going, who have that focus, that discipline.”

During the shoot, something unexpected happened. Passersby began stopping, not just to watch, but to ask questions. Where can I buy this? Is this a Greek brand? Can I be in the campaign? The line between performance and reality blurred. The city itself became part of the story.

The Founder: From TV to Track

Vicky Kaya’s path to fashion wasn’t linear. Known primarily as a television personality and model, she launched Greatness Athens as something more personal – a response to what she saw missing in the market.

“I was tired of wearing brands that had nothing to do with my life,” she says. “I’m Greek. I live in Athens. I wanted clothes that understood that. That understood our light, our pace, our attitude.”

The brand has grown steadily since its launch, building a community that extends beyond customers to genuine advocates. The Greatness Athens Instagram account doesn’t just post product shots – it features real people wearing the clothes in real situations. Running. Working. Dancing. Living.

“The community is everything,” Kaya emphasizes. “These aren’t just buyers. They’re people who believe in what we’re doing. Who want to support Greek creativity. Who understand that fashion can be more than consumption.”

The Message: On Track, On Direction

The campaign’s tagline is direct: “I’m here, more present than ever. I’m on track.”

It’s a call to action, but also a statement of intent. In a world of constant distraction, of endless scrolling, of constant comparison, being “on track” is radical. It means knowing where you stand. Seeing your goal clearly. Running toward it without stopping.

“Every start is a personal restart,” reads the campaign copy. “Every obstacle is a challenge to overcome.” The clothes become symbols of the path – of discipline, of the power of setting goals and chasing them, whether in athletics, career, or dreams.

It’s aspirational without being unattainable. It’s motivational without being preachy. It’s very Athens – pragmatic, philosophical, and just a little bit defiant.

The City as Canvas

What makes this campaign distinctly Athenian is its refusal to sanitize the city. The backgrounds aren’t picture-perfect. There’s graffiti. There are uneven pavements. There are buildings that need renovation and streets that need cleaning.

But there’s also beauty – the particular quality of Attic light, the way the city’s energy pulses through every frame, the sense that something is always happening, always being created.

“Athens isn’t perfect,” Kaya acknowledges. “But it’s real. It’s alive. That’s what we wanted to show. Not some fantasy version, but the actual city where real people are doing real things.”

The campaign has resonated particularly with younger Athenians, the generation that came of age during economic uncertainty but refuses to be defined by it. They’re the ones launching startups, opening galleries, making music, building businesses. They’re on track, even when the track isn’t clearly marked.

Beyond Fashion

As the shoot wraps and the October sun begins its descent, casting that golden-hour light that photographers dream about, Kaya reflects on what comes next.

“This collection is about momentum,” she says. “About not stopping. We’re already thinking about the next one, the next campaign, the next way to tell this story.”

But she’s also clear about what won’t change: the commitment to Greek production, to quality over quantity, to building something lasting rather than just chasing trends.

“Fast fashion is killing creativity,” she says plainly. “We’re not interested in that. We want pieces people keep, pieces that mean something.”

As the team packs up equipment and models change back into their own clothes – many of which, notably, are also Greatness Athens pieces – there’s a sense of something accomplished. Not just a campaign completed, but a statement made.

Athens, with all its contradictions and complications, its ancient wisdom and modern hustle, has found another voice. And that voice is saying: We’re here. We’re on track. Watch us.

The ‘Greatness on Track’ collection is available now through the Greatness Athens website and select retailers in Athens and beyond. But the real collection – the community, the philosophy, the movement – is still being built, one person at a time, one step at a time, always moving forward.

Because that’s what being on track means. Not perfection. Not arrival. Just the courage to keep running.
