THESSALONIKI, December 23 – The Athens-bound lane on the Thessaloniki-Athens National Road, specifically at the Malgara tolls, has been reopened to traffic after a 23-day blockade by protesting farmers. The blockade, which began on December 1, had caused significant disruption to travel between the two major Greek cities. Traffic is now flowing in two lanes towards Athens, while the Thessaloniki-bound lanes operate with three.

Farmers Rearrange Tractors, Authorities Clear Roadway

Farmers, who had maintained a presence at the tolls since the beginning of December, rearranged their tractors to allow for the resumption of traffic. This move facilitated the reopening of the two lanes towards Athens. Following the farmers’ action, the Fire Service and a team from Egnatia Odos promptly arrived at the scene to clear the roadway of any debris or obstructions. The Director of the Thessaloniki Traffic Police was also present to oversee the operation and ensure a smooth transition.

First Vehicles Pass Through Malgara Tolls

Upon completion of the roadway clearing, the two lanes were immediately opened to traffic. The first vehicles were observed passing normally through the Malgara tolls on their way to Athens, marking an end to the prolonged disruption. The reopening is expected to significantly ease travel for commuters and holidaymakers, especially during the Christmas period.

Impact of the Blockade and Ongoing Protests

The 23-day blockade at Malgara was part of a wider series of farmers’ protests across Greece, demanding better prices for their produce, reduced production costs, and other agricultural policy changes. While the Malgara blockade has been partially lifted, other agricultural blockades continue in various parts of the country, causing ongoing traffic disruptions. For instance, reports indicate a traffic ‘blackout’ on the Athens-Lamia highway and diversions at the Nikaia blockade.

Authorities Urge Caution Amidst Holiday Travel

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and stay informed about the latest traffic conditions, especially as Christmas travelers take to the roads. The partial reopening at Malgara provides some relief, but the overall situation regarding farmers’ protests remains dynamic. The ongoing demonstrations highlight the persistent challenges faced by the agricultural sector in Greece.

Looking Ahead: Resolution of Farmers’ Demands

The government and farmers’ representatives are expected to continue negotiations to address the outstanding demands. The partial lifting of the blockade at Malgara may be seen as a gesture of goodwill, but a comprehensive resolution is still awaited. The economic impact of such prolonged blockades on various sectors, including transportation and commerce, is substantial.

Further updates on traffic conditions and the status of farmers’ protests are anticipated as the situation evolves. Travelers are advised to consult official traffic advisories before embarking on their journeys.
