A 32-year-old foreign woman, suspected of being a member of an international drug smuggling ring, was arrested at Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos on Saturday afternoon. The arrest came after authorities, through a combination of cross-checking information, data analysis, and profiling, identified her upon her arrival from abroad.
Details of the Drug Bust at Athens Airport
Upon being approached and searched, the woman was found to have meticulously concealed 18 nylon bags of unprocessed hydroponic cannabis, commonly known as skunk, within her luggage. The total weight of the confiscated drugs amounted to 18.59 kilograms. Her intended final destination for the illicit cargo was the Greek island of Rhodes.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody by the Athens International Airport narcotics squad. She faces charges of importing the prohibited substance into Greece. Police have indicated that the 32-year-old is believed to be part of a larger international criminal organization involved in the aerial smuggling of cannabis.
Following her arrest, the woman is scheduled to appear before the appropriate prosecuting authority to face legal proceedings.
Shifting Drug Landscape in Greece
This arrest comes amidst a changing drug landscape in Greece, as highlighted by a recent report from the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA). The report, presented on June 9, 2026, reveals significant trends in drug use across the country.
Cannabis Use on the Rise, Cocaine Gaining Ground
According to the European Drug Report 2026, cannabis use among teenagers in Greece has reached its highest level in 25 years. Furthermore, cocaine and other stimulants are increasingly prevalent throughout the country. While cannabis remains the most commonly used illegal substance, cocaine use continues to escalate. Opioids, primarily heroin, are still responsible for the majority of overdose deaths in Greece.
The report also notes a substantial increase in the number of individuals seeking treatment for cannabis use, which has risen by 32 percent compared to a decade ago. This statistic suggests a deeper entrenchment of the drug within Greek society among users.
The ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies, such as the Athens International Airport narcotics squad, are crucial in combating the evolving challenges posed by international drug smuggling and the changing patterns of drug use in Greece.
