Fire Erupts at Omonia Hotel Due to Exploding E-Scooter

Athens, June 28 – A fire erupted on Sunday, June 28, at a hotel located in the bustling Omonia Square area of central Athens. The blaze was attributed to the explosion of an electric scooter while it was undergoing charging. The incident, which occurred in a ground-floor room or storage area, prompted a swift response from emergency services and led to the evacuation of the hotel’s residents.

Rapid Fire Service Response and Evacuation

The initial reports indicate that the fire began after the lithium-ion battery of the electric scooter either overheated or malfunctioned during its charging cycle. Firefighters were dispatched promptly to the scene, with a contingent of 25 personnel and seven fire engines, including specialized equipment such as a fire ladder. Their rapid intervention successfully contained the fire, preventing its spread to the hotel’s upper floors and guest rooms. However, the building quickly filled with thick smoke, necessitating the immediate evacuation of all occupants.

Injuries Reported and Traffic Restrictions

Among those affected, a 41-year-old man, identified as the owner of the electric scooter, sustained burns to his arms and legs and was subsequently transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Additionally, two other individuals were hospitalized after suffering from smoke inhalation, highlighting the dangers posed by the dense smoke generated by such fires. During the emergency operation, traffic was temporarily restricted in the vicinity of Omonia Square, specifically on 3 September Street and Veranzerou Street, to facilitate the work of emergency services.

Investigation Underway and Safety Concerns

The Fire Service’s investigative unit has initiated a comprehensive inquiry to ascertain the precise cause of the fire. While preliminary findings strongly suggest the exploding e-scooter as the origin, official conclusions are pending the completion of the investigation. This incident serves as a critical reminder of the inherent risks associated with charging electric scooters and other devices powered by lithium-ion batteries indoors, particularly within multi-story buildings. Overheating or damaged batteries can ignite rapidly and produce substantial amounts of toxic smoke, which often presents a greater threat than the flames themselves.

Resident Accounts and Broader Implications

One resident, evacuated from the eighth floor, recounted the terrifying experience: “All I heard was glass breaking and screams. The smoke was so thick it was hard to breathe.” This incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines for charging such devices and raises broader questions about electric vehicle safety in urban environments. Authorities continue to emphasize caution and proper handling of lithium-ion battery-powered devices to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
