LEFKIMMI. (FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE). The current Municipal Authority, out of respect for the citizens of South Corfu, has until now avoided sterile confrontation with the previous administration. However, recent announcements by members of the former administration, following the 2nd Accountability Session of the Municipal Council, compel us to restore the truth with specific data. We are obliged to responsibly inform our people about the actual state of the projects we inherited and the actions we have taken to secure them.
Road Network: Projects Continue Despite Past Mismanagement
The road network maintenance project (worth €1.5 million) was intended for the entire Municipality. Instead, we inherited a situation where 80% of the funds had already been spent almost exclusively in the Municipal Unit of Meliteieon (excluding Strongyli and Chlomos).
Our Intervention:
We received a remaining balance of €433,000 and managed to complete the Vassilatika-Korakades projects, interventions in Petriti, the Latzes-Argyrades road, and a section in Strongyli. A balance of €280,000 remains, and we have granted an extension to the contractor until May 28, 2026, to complete the project. The project has not been lost; it continues, despite the fact that most of the funds had already been absorbed before we took office.
Lefkimmi Indoor Sports Center: Securing Completion with an Additional €1 Million
The previous administration planned a project with an incomplete study and insufficient funding.
Our Intervention:
We prepared a new study and increased the funding to €3,799,788.58. We secured an additional €1,000,000 and released €760,560.73 from the Municipality’s own resources, which will be allocated to other projects in 2026. The project now has guaranteed funding for its completion.
Rural Road Construction: Correcting Legal Gaps
Indeed, there was a consortium of two contractors. Subsequently, one of the two contractors declared bankruptcy, rendering the project impossible to execute. In order to save it, we proceeded with a substitution of the contractor, which the Court of Auditors did not accept.
The Solution:
We are immediately proceeding with a re-tender. The new contractor will be in place within 6 months. The project is active and will be implemented in full.
Electromobility: Restoring Legality
It was found that the supply of €1.45 million had been tendered with serious inconsistencies (different machinery in the study and different in the proclamation), without a prior decision by the Municipal Committee to modify the Technical Data Sheet.
The Action:
We canceled the flawed tender and are proceeding with a re-tender with absolute transparency and technical correctness.
SMART CITY: Digital Transformation with Substantial Energy Upgrade
The “Smart City” project, officially contracted by our Municipal Authority, did not remain within its initial limited goals. We proceeded with crucial interventions to ensure the maximum benefit for the citizen:
Strategic Modification:
We requested and achieved the modification of the Technical Data Sheet, including the installation of 350 modern LED lighting fixtures. With our own initiative and funding from our own resources amounting to €600,000, we are proceeding with the replacement of another 2,000 lighting fixtures with LED technology. The Result: We are transforming our Municipality into a modern, “smart” Municipality, simultaneously achieving a huge energy upgrade and a drastic reduction in operating costs (electricity bills), resources that will be returned to citizens through other services.
Conclusion:
South Corfu does not need communication fireworks, but projects with secured funding and proper studies. The current Municipal Authority works daily to “cure” the failures of the past and to deliver to the citizens the infrastructures they deserve. All the above constitute irrefutable evidence of a strategy that corrects mistakes, secures lost funds, and produces work with transparency and a plan.
