New acts of sabotage are continuing to impede the water transfer project from Klimatia to Nisaki, despite a judicial vindication of the Municipality of North Corfu, a decision by the Municipal Council, and the fact that ten communities within the Municipality of North Corfu supply water to other communities.
Municipal Council Addresses Water Project Concerns
Following a discussion on the water supply project being carried out in the area of the Klimatia Local Community by the DEYAK (Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of North Corfu), the Municipal Council of North Corfu, during its meeting on June 16, 2026, listened carefully, respectfully, and responsibly to the views, concerns, and anxieties expressed by the residents of the areas, as well as the legal arguments presented during the discussion.
It was also emphasized that water is a public and communal good, the management of which is exercised by the competent public bodies for the benefit of society as a whole. The utilization of surplus water resources is carried out exclusively within the framework of legality and the protection of the actual needs of each area.
After extensive discussion, the Municipal Council of North Corfu decided, among other things, the following:
- The residents’ concern for ensuring the water supply adequacy of their area is absolutely respected.
- It endorsed the decision of the DEYAK Board of Directors concerning the continuation of the water supply network extension works from Klimatia to Nisaki, judging that these serve purposes of public interest and contribute to the rational management of water resources, the enhancement of water supply to areas facing increased needs, and the improvement of fire protection in the DEYAK’s area of responsibility.
- It was clarified with absolute certainty that the primary priority is the full assurance of Klimatia’s water supply adequacy. The transfer of water to the Nisaki community is foreseen to take place exclusively from the surplus quantity of water that remains available after the full coverage of Klimatia’s water supply needs, without affecting the rights, adequacy, and needs of the residents of the area. Specifically, the allocation of up to one-quarter of the surplus quantity to the Nisaki community is provided for.
- There will be continuous monitoring and control of the water system’s level and reserves to ensure that the current and future needs of Klimatia residents are prioritized.
New Sabotage Incidents Reported
However, despite the Municipal Council’s decisions on the evening of June 16, and despite the rejection of interim measures that vindicated the Municipality of North Corfu, the decision of the North Corfu Municipal Council, and the fact that 10 communities in the Municipality of North Corfu supply water to many villages, events that occurred yesterday, June 17, 2026, during the continuation of the project works by residents of Klimatia, are causing particular concern.
Specifically:
A team of workers from the Municipality of North Corfu and DEYAK, who went to the area to carry out water supply and fire protection works, were subjected to harassment, verbal attacks, threats, and obstruction in the performance of their duties.
At the same time, interventions and damages were once again found on the project’s pipeline, which constitutes a serious offense against a public utility project that serves water supply, civil protection, and citizen safety needs.
The Municipal Authority clarifies that it fully respects every citizen’s right to express their disagreement and to pursue their demands through democratic means. However, any action that leads to threats, harassment of employees, damage to municipal property, or obstruction of the execution of public utility works cannot be accepted.
At a time when the climate crisis, prolonged droughts, and increased needs make water a precious and vulnerable resource, calmness, responsibility, and cooperation are required. The local communities of the Municipality of North Corfu have nothing to divide them. On the contrary, they are called to proceed in a spirit of solidarity, equality, and common interest.
Dialogue will continue. Citizen information, transparency, scientific documentation, and respect for legality are the basic principles on which every decision concerning the future of North Corfu’s water resources is based.
In any case, the Municipality of North Corfu and DEYAK will defend by all legal means the uninterrupted execution of public utility works, the safety of their employees, municipal property, and the right of all citizens to adequate water supply and effective fire protection.
