Corfu, June 18, 2026 – The Corfu Appeals Court has confirmed a two-year prison sentence for an individual involved in an act of violence against a nurse at the Corfu Hospital in 2019. This landmark decision, announced today, has been met with strong approval from the Medical Association of Corfu, which views it as a crucial step towards ensuring the safety and respect of healthcare workers.
Violence Against Healthcare Workers: A Fundamental Principle Upheld
The incident, which occurred during the examination of a relative of the convicted individual, has finally reached a definitive legal conclusion after several years. The Medical Association of Corfu issued a statement following the ruling, highlighting its significance.
“Although several years have passed since the incident, this vindication confirms a fundamental principle: violence against people serving the National Health System is unacceptable and does not go unpunished,” stated the Medical Association. They further emphasized the challenging conditions under which healthcare professionals operate, stressing the need for composure, respect, and a secure working environment.
The Association underlined that “Violence against an employee is not only an illegal act but an attack on social cohesion itself and on the smooth functioning of the institution that provides care to those in need.”
A Strong Message for Hospital Safety
The Medical Association of Corfu expressed its satisfaction with the application of relevant legislation and the final ruling. “This definitive decision sends a strong message in every direction: hospital workers are not targets. Our hospital must be a safe place, both for patients and for staff,” the statement continued.
Despite the time elapsed and the “anachronistic judicial system” that led to delays and numerous postponements over seven years, the judicial verdict is seen as a source of satisfaction. It restores a sense of justice for the assaulted colleague and enhances the feeling of security for all employees.
The Association also noted that this is the second conviction for violence within the hospital during that period, further reinforcing the message of zero tolerance. They expressed hope that the new legislation of 2022, which aims to accelerate and simplify the administration of justice, will reduce incidents of violence against frontline healthcare workers.
Continued Support for Healthcare Professionals
The Medical Association of Corfu affirmed its commitment to supporting any employee who falls victim to unprovoked attacks. They pledged to exhaust every legal avenue to ensure that their workplace remains free from violence.
The case originated from a criminal complaint filed by the then Director of the Hospital, Mr. Kakavitsas, following the assault. Witnesses, including other hospital staff, also testified during the prolonged legal proceedings.
This ruling is expected to serve as a deterrent and to foster a more respectful and secure environment for healthcare providers in Corfu and beyond. It highlights the ongoing efforts to protect those who dedicate their lives to public health, ensuring they can perform their duties without fear of violence.
The incident and subsequent legal battle underscore the critical need for robust legal frameworks and their diligent enforcement to safeguard essential public services and their personnel.
