Corfu, March 9, 2026 – The Old Philharmonic Band of Corfu paid a heartfelt tribute to women yesterday, March 8th, on International Women’s Day, with a special concert dedicated to the female gender. The event, held in a packed theatre, celebrated women’s enduring contributions to society, culture, family, and art through a unique musical performance.
Honouring a Pioneer: Nena Dolianiti
A highlight of the concert was the recognition of 84-year-old Nena Dolianiti, Corfu’s first female philharmonic musician. Mrs. Dolianiti broke barriers in 1954, at the age of 13, when she first performed as a saxophonist with the “Mantzaros” Philharmonic Society. Her pioneering spirit was celebrated as an inspiration for all.
An All-Female Ensemble
The thematic section of the concert, specifically dedicated to women, showcased an entirely female cast of performers. Vocalists included Eirini Kalogera, Eva Kargiofyli, Despoina Mouratidi, and Elena Ristova. The “Androniki” women’s polyphonic ensemble from the Cultural Association of Kato Garouna also participated, under the direction of maestro Spyros Skordilis. Violin soloists Magdalini and Adamantini Varotsi further enriched the performance. The women’s bandina was curated and conducted by Dimitra Kalogeropoulou, underscoring the talent and dedication of women in music.
A Celebration of Feminine Identity Through Music
Through a blend of Corfiot melodies, well-known songs, and hymns, the concert explored the multifaceted aspects of female identity. Themes of love, tenderness, sanctity, strength, creativity, and the pursuit of equality and respect resonated throughout the performances. The event served as a powerful acknowledgment of women’s fundamental role in both society and culture.
Original Works and Young Talent
The first part of the concert, a tradition now established, featured original works for wind orchestra. This section included performances by young award-winning musicians from the annual wind instrument competition, held in memory of musicologist Spyros Motsenigou: Alexandros Stoikos and Fotis Dellis. The narration was provided by Iro Lella, based on texts by musician Eva Krokidi, with the overall direction by Spyros Prosoparis, Chief Musician of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu.
Broader Context of International Women’s Day
This commemorative concert is part of a wider series of events and discussions taking place globally and within Greece to mark International Women’s Day. It highlights the ongoing efforts to recognize women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality in all spheres of life.
The event underscores Corfu’s commitment to cultural celebration and its appreciation for the arts, while also drawing attention to important social themes. The overwhelming attendance demonstrates the community’s engagement with both music and the message of women’s empowerment.
Further details on future cultural events by the Old Philharmonic Band and other local cultural institutions are expected to be announced, continuing Corfu’s vibrant artistic tradition.
