Massive Wildfire Erupts Near Athens, Firefighters Battle Blaze
Athens, June 3 – A significant wildfire erupted yesterday afternoon in the scrubland north of the Sofo district, near the industrial town of Aspropyrgos, located west of the Greek capital. The blaze, which quickly spread towards neighboring mountains, has prompted a large-scale response from emergency services. Over 100 firefighters have been deployed to the area to contain the flames.
Emergency Response and Resources Deployed
The fire broke out shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Fire department officials have confirmed that, as of now, residential areas are not facing immediate danger. However, the rapid spread of the fire through areas with sparse vegetation necessitated a swift and comprehensive response.
By the end of yesterday, a total of 108 firefighters were actively involved in the operation. They were supported by six specialized ground crews, 32 fire trucks, five helicopters, and one coordination aircraft. Additionally, local volunteers, municipal water tankers, and heavy equipment were on-site, providing crucial assistance in the effort to extinguish the fire.
Context of Wildfires in the Region
This incident follows other recent wildfire outbreaks in different regions. In the Rivne region, a forest fire was reported after a drone crashed. Furthermore, a large-scale forest fire has been observed in the Chernihiv region, near the state border. Preliminary investigations suggest that the latter fire may have been caused by Russian shelling of border areas. Over the past 24 hours, the Russian army reportedly carried out 41 strikes on border areas in the Chernihiv region, primarily utilizing FPV drones.
In a separate incident, a Russian FPV drone also struck a utility vehicle in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The vehicle was carrying power company workers who were en route to perform restoration work, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by civilians and emergency personnel in conflict zones.
Ongoing Efforts and Outlook
Firefighters in Athens continue their tireless efforts to bring the Aspropyrgos blaze under control. The coordinated response from various emergency units and the support from local volunteers are critical in managing the situation. Authorities remain vigilant, monitoring the fire’s progression and ensuring the safety of nearby communities.
Further updates on the situation are expected as the firefighting operations continue.
