The Ionian Islands Region made a strong impression at one of the world’s most significant tourism markets, the USA, successfully participating for the second consecutive year with an autonomous booth at the Travel & Adventure Show. The event took place on January 24 and 25 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York.

A Key Event for Tourism Professionals and the Public

This show is considered one of the most important tourism events in the United States, attracting both the general public and tourism professionals. The regional authority’s announcement highlighted the significance of the event:

“At a time when the American market shows a steady preference for Greece, the event provided an ideal platform for promoting the comparative advantages of the Ionian Islands, combining a business approach with cultural and gastronomic diplomacy.”

The Region’s presence in the USA underscores its intention for a coordinated and long-term investment in attracting high-end travelers.

Gastronomic Diplomacy and Targeted Promotion

In addition to the main exhibition, the Ionian Islands Region successfully organized a targeted promotional event focusing on the islands’ unique gastronomy and local products. This event served as a networking platform and showcased the Ionian tourism product.

Furthermore, the Region undertook a targeted advertising campaign in the heart of New York, displaying the Ionian Islands on giant screens in Times Square, as part of its strategic tourism promotion efforts. This initiative aimed to directly connect the Ionian Islands with the most influential trendsetters in American tourism, highlighting the Ionian as a destination of luxury, culture, and unique gastronomic identity.

Strong Interest from Consumers and Professionals

During the Travel & Adventure Show, there was significant interest in the Ionian Islands, with numerous consumers and tourism professionals visiting the Region’s booth to learn about the characteristics and unique identity of the Ionian islands. It is noteworthy that many expatriate Ionians also visited the exhibition, serving as valuable ambassadors for the Ionian Islands abroad, consistently and practically supporting their promotion and international visibility.

Strategic Representation and Networking

Both at the exhibition and during parallel events and working meetings, executives from the Ionian Islands Region actively participated, ensuring a multifaceted presentation of the destination:

  • Ms. Eleni Papanastasatou, Deputy Regional Governor for Entrepreneurship & Expatriate Hellenism, focused on cooperation prospects with the diaspora and strengthening local entrepreneurship.
  • Mr. Spyros Argyros, Deputy Regional Governor for Small Islands & Intra-Regional Transport, analyzed the importance of optimal access and the need to strengthen the connectivity of destinations, highlighting the effort to promote the small islands of the Region (Ithaca, Paxos, Othonoi, Ereikoussa, Mathraki, Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos) as “virgin paradises.”
  • Ms. Magdalini Louvrou, Director of Tourism, presented the tourism strategy and the competitive advantages of the islands.
  • Ms. Kyriaki Kyriaki, Director of Planning, analyzed the sustainable development plan and the infrastructure that makes the Ionian Islands attractive for 2026.

Meetings with International Networks

The delegation had the opportunity to engage with representatives of major tourism organizations, including Virtuoso (a leading global luxury travel network), ASTA, MAPTA, and TABS. The Region’s goal is to build trusting relationships with travel agents who shape trends across the Atlantic.

Gastronomy as a “Spearhead” for Promotion

The Ionian region offered guests a culinary journey through the creations of the distinguished Corfiot chef, Tasos Andriotis, who presented gastronomy not merely as an accompanying element, but as a fundamental reason to visit. The presentation demonstrated how local production and the authentic flavors of Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and all the islands create a unique experiential journey for the discerning American traveler.

Vision for 2026

The Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Mr. Giannis Trepekli, through his message and through the Deputy Regional Governors and executives who represented the Region at this year’s Exhibition in New York, highlighted the Ionian Islands as a safe and welcoming destination, offering high-quality services, a strong cultural imprint, and, of course, the unparalleled natural beauty of the Ionian’s characteristic blue-green seascape.

The high-level services, the developed sense of hospitality of the residents, easy access through the four international airports, and the safety of the destinations, combined with respect for the environment, rich cultural heritage, and the unique gastronomic identity of the Ionian Islands, make them highly sought-after international destinations with a strong presence in both traditional and new major markets.
