Major Blow to International Drug Ring at Athens Airport
Athens, January 12 – Greek police have dealt a significant blow to an international drug trafficking network with the arrest of three foreign women at Athens International Airport on Saturday, January 10. The women were apprehended as they attempted to smuggle 72.7 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis out of the country.
The arrests were carried out around midday by officers of the Narcotics Division of the Organized Crime Directorate. This operation was part of targeted inspections aimed at preventing the export of illegal drugs through Greek airports.
Details of the Operation
According to the Greek Police (EL.AS.), the suspects are women aged 29, 33, and 37. They are believed to be members of an international criminal organization involved in the transport and export of hydroponically grown cannabis-commonly known as skunk-to Italy by air.
Their identification followed the evaluation of intelligence, cross-checking of data, analytical processing, and operational profiling. The women were preparing to board a flight bound for a region of Italy when they were intercepted.
During baggage inspections, officers discovered a total of 72.7 kilograms of raw hydroponic cannabis. The illicit substance was carefully concealed in nylon-wrapped packages inside the suspects’ suitcases.
In addition to the drugs, three mobile phones were seized. These devices are currently being examined as potential evidence to determine the full scope of the criminal operation and the network’s connections.
Ongoing Investigation
The three women have been brought before the competent public prosecutor. Investigations remain ongoing to identify further individuals involved in the case and to uncover the full extent of the drug trafficking network.
This operation highlights the continuous efforts of Greek authorities to combat international drug trafficking and secure the country’s borders against such illicit activities.
This incident follows other recent drug-related arrests in the region, including the detention of a 41-year-old foreign national in central Athens on a Turkish warrant for drug trafficking, robbery, and other serious offenses, which occurred on December 20, 2025. Furthermore, 12 individuals were arrested in a school drug trafficking ring on December 20, 2025, and Greek Police are set to acquire high-tech equipment for drug detection, as announced on November 18, 2025.
The successful operation at Athens Airport underscores the vigilance and effectiveness of the Greek police force in safeguarding public safety and disrupting organized crime.
