Cyprus Justice Minister Arrives in Athens for Key Bilateral Discussions

Athens, January 12 – The Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, Costas Fitiris, commenced a working visit to Athens today, Monday, January 12. The Cypriot Minister is scheduled to hold a series of high-level meetings with his Greek counterparts to enhance cooperation across several critical sectors.

Agenda: Maritime Safety, Law Enforcement, and Judicial Cooperation

During his visit, Minister Fitiris will engage in discussions with Vassilis Kikilias, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy; Georgios Florides, the Minister of Justice; and Michalis Chrysochoides, the Minister of Citizen Protection. According to a press release issued by the Ministry, the primary objective of these contacts is to strengthen the collaboration between Cyprus and Greece on matters of maritime safety, law enforcement, and broader Justice and Police cooperation.

The emphasis on maritime safety underscores the shared strategic interests of both island nations in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly concerning control of territorial waters, search and rescue operations, and combating illegal activities at sea. Discussions on law enforcement and judicial cooperation are expected to cover areas such as cross-border crime, extradition procedures, and harmonization of legal frameworks, aiming to create a more robust and unified approach to justice within the region.

Cyprus EU Presidency Priorities to be Presented

Beyond bilateral issues, Minister Fitiris will also use this opportunity to present the priorities of the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. This presentation is a crucial component of Cyprus’s preparatory work for its leadership role within the European Union, ensuring that key member states are informed and aligned with its agenda.

Furthermore, the Cypriot Minister will brief his Greek colleagues about the Informal Council on Justice and Home Affairs. This significant event is scheduled to take place in Nicosia from January 21-23, and Fitiris’s discussions in Athens are part of the broader diplomatic efforts to ensure its success and foster consensus on key European justice and home affairs policies.

The visit highlights the ongoing commitment of both Cyprus and Greece to deepen their strategic partnership, not only at a bilateral level but also within the wider European framework. Such high-level engagements are instrumental in coordinating policies and addressing common challenges effectively.
