Injured Sea Turtle Found on Acharavi Beach, Corfu – Immediate Rescue Operation Underway

Corfu, January 14 – An injured Caretta Caretta sea turtle was found yesterday, January 13, 2026, on Acharavi Beach in North Corfu. The discovery prompted immediate action from the North Corfu Municipality and the ARCHELON organization, a sea turtle protection society.

Prompt Response After Citizen Alert

The injured turtle was located at the height of Road 9 on Acharavi Beach following a swift phone call from a local resident. This timely alert highlights the crucial role of public awareness and cooperation with local authorities in protecting marine life.

Upon receiving the report, Ms. Spyridoula Kokkali, Deputy Mayor of Environment and Circular Economy for the North Corfu Municipality, along with volunteer Mr. Georgios Michalakis, immediately went to the scene. They promptly contacted ARCHELON, with whom the North Corfu Municipality maintains a systematic collaboration for the protection of marine species.

Transfer to ARCHELON’s Rescue Center

Following instructions from ARCHELON experts, the turtle was carefully placed in a special box and is currently being transported to the ARCHELON Sea Turtle Rescue Center in Athens via KTEL bus. This transfer is critical for providing the specialized veterinary care the turtle urgently needs.

Serious Injuries Discovered

The turtle was found with a severe injury to its right flipper, and a fishing hook was also discovered in its mouth. Further updates on the turtle’s health status are expected from ARCHELON as it undergoes treatment.

Appeal to Public for Vigilance

The North Corfu Municipality has reiterated its appeal to all residents and visitors to immediately report any sightings of injured or exhausted marine species to the relevant authorities. The municipality noted that such incidents are becoming more frequent, particularly on the beaches of Roda, Acharavi, and Almyros, possibly due to prevailing weather conditions.

Contact numbers for reporting:

  • Deputy Mayor of Environment & Circular Economy, Spyridoula Kokkali: 697 861 4699
