Cypriot and Greek visual artists are collaborating in the group exhibition “Everything Signs Its Name,” curated by Evagoria Dapola and hosted from November 20th at the contemporary art gallery MISC Athens.
Exploring the ‘Infraordinary’
The exhibition brings together the multifaceted practices of nine visual artists, emphasizing the ordinary as a powerful tool for socio-ecological and cultural reflection. The concept of the “Infraordinary,” as introduced by Paul Virilio and Georges Perec, seeks to explore the habitual and overlooked aspects of daily life-the small, almost invisible moments that compose the fabric of our experience and shape our sense of self within the world.
The exhibition features works by Anna Gonzales Noguchi, Danae Io, Marina Kassianidou, Phanos Kyriacou, Christos Kyriakides, Aristotelis Mochloulis, Panos Profitis, Constantinos Taliotis, and Dimitris Tampakis. It highlights the power of personal intimacy within broader cultural, social, political, communal, and architectural contexts. According to the exhibition’s rationale, “it is an opportunity to reconnect with all that we dismiss as self-evident and to rediscover all that already speaks to us.”
The Unreliable Witness of Experience
Experience can be an unreliable witness, as our position in the landscape of existence is not “detached” from the whole. Memories and knowledge must be excavated either from the level of our ideas or from some kind of material existence. They are sought in microscopic traces, in minimal elements, in tiny moments that build our understanding of the world around us.
However, we rarely pay attention to them. We seem to forget that every tiny piece, every minimal part, and the softest gesture, embody the whole in a specific connection within it. When did signatures become an affirmation of our presence?
A Timely Exploration in a Changing World
In an era characterized by rapid global changes, from climate crises, pandemics, and technological overload, the exhibition shifts focus from the magnificent to the everyday. It is a timely exploration of how the overlooked details of routine reveal profound truths about who we are and how we live.
The exhibition becomes a place of reconnection with what we often overlook: the gentle gestures, the imperceptible images, the micro-instances that shape our collective and individual experience. By investigating how these moments function simultaneously as a spiritual environment and a cultural image, the exhibition brings to the forefront relational practices that combine spatial sensation with psychic topographies, opening up the archives of our everyday, ordinary memories.
Poetic Readings of Intimacy and Memory
Through various media, the artists propose a poetic reading of intimacy and memory, highlighting the fragile yet fertile relationship between matter, time, and perception. Thus, the exhibition becomes an opportunity to engage deeply with everything that surrounds us, whether it is natural, mental, emotional, digital, structural, ordinary, yet always so ordinary that we no longer pay attention to it.
