Athens Prioritizes De-escalation Amid Widening Middle East Conflict

Athens, Greece – March 3, 2026 – Confronted with a widening Middle East conflict and mounting security concerns in nearby Cyprus, the Greek government has moved to protect its citizens abroad while placing de-escalation and regional stability at the center of its response to the fighting between the US and Israel, and Iran.

In the first days after the outbreak of hostilities, Athens activated all available diplomatic channels to safeguard Greek citizens in the region. Communication lines were opened with embassies and consulates, focusing on ensuring nationals’ safety and, where necessary, facilitating their relocation if security concerns arise.

Greece’s Diplomatic Stance and Emphasis on Stability

Greece’s diplomatic stance – despite the foreign minister’s reference to the necessity that Iran not possess nuclear weapons – has been described as cautious, centered on the need to de-escalate the crisis. The prime minister’s office has emphasized stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, while officials have repeatedly stressed there is “no possibility” of Greece becoming involved in the war.

At the same time, security developments in Cyprus have sharpened concerns. Four Greek F-16 fighter jets landed on the island Monday afternoon, following drone overflights at the British air base at Akrotiri. “Four F-16 aircraft of the Hellenic Air Force have just landed in Cyprus, following an immediate response by the Greek government, as part of strengthening preventive measures and the close cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Greece,” Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis wrote.

Defense Minister Announces Frigate Deployment

Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has also announced that Greece will send two frigates to Cyprus – the Kimon and another equipped with the anti-drone system Centaur. Dendias is due to travel to the island Tuesday for meetings with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, two drones that caused minor damage at Akrotiri were launched from Lebanon and, due to their small size and low altitude, were not detected in time to be intercepted. The same reports said they were launched by Hezbollah forces. Christodoulides said the drone involved was Iranian-made, of the Shahed type.

Brig General Ebrahim Jabbari of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, quoted by Iran’s Tasnim agency, said: “The Americans have relocated most of their aircraft to Cyprus. We will launch missiles at Cyprus so intensively that the Americans will be forced to leave this island.”

The deployment of military assets underscores Greece’s commitment to regional security and its close alliance with Cyprus. The Greek government’s proactive measures aim to deter further escalation and protect strategic interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.

International Reactions and Future Outlook

The situation in the region remains fluid, with international actors closely monitoring developments. The United States and its allies have expressed concerns about the potential for wider conflict, while diplomatic efforts continue to seek a peaceful resolution.

Greece’s actions are seen as a clear signal of its determination to maintain stability and protect its sovereignty and that of its allies. The ongoing dialogue between Athens and Nicosia, coupled with military cooperation, is expected to play a crucial role in navigating the complex geopolitical landscape of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its call for all parties to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue to prevent further destabilization of the region. The focus remains on safeguarding human lives and ensuring the peaceful coexistence of nations.
