A Legacy of Culture and Patriotism

The celebration commenced with an address by the Society’s President, Mr. Athanasios Makris, who extended gratitude to the speakers and exhibition contributors. Mr. Makris also unveiled the Society’s new informational brochure, published for the anniversary thanks to a sponsorship from Ms. Eleni Stampolgi-Gousti. Following this, the honorary President, Mr. Giannis Pieris, spoke, and greetings were delivered by Undersecretary Mr. Stefanos Gikas and Mayor Mr. Stefanos Poulimenos.

The event featured insightful presentations from several prominent figures:

From a Reading Room to a Cultural Beacon

Founded 190 years ago by 14 young Corfiot bourgeois, graduates of European universities, the Corfu Reading Society began as a ‘Reading Room’ for newspapers and scientific treatises, a library, and a space for social interaction. Over the decades, it evolved into a political and patriotic club, advocating for the Greek language and the unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece. It became a focal point of Corfiot and generally Ionian urban tradition, a place for studying and promoting Ionian culture.

Distinguished personalities who were members of the Society include its first president, philosopher and politician P. Vrailas-Armenis, the emblematic poets D. Solomos and A. Kalvos, the writer and politician I. Polylas, Prime Minister G. Theotokis, the heroic poet L. Mavilis, the leading watercolorist A. Giallinas, the leading prose writer N. Theotokis, and many others.

Despite facing challenging conditions periodically, the Corfu Reading Society managed to solidify its crucial role in the intellectual life of the Ionian region. In the 1920s, with the generous support of its members, it acquired its permanent headquarters at 120 Kapodistriou Street. World War II temporarily halted its progress, but the Society recovered after liberation, again thanks to its members’ assistance.

Modern Activities and Future Plans

Since the 1960s, the Reading Society has systematically organized its intellectual and cultural activities, focusing on research and highlighting the Ionian identity, while also engaging in broader social activities addressing key local community issues. Significant milestones in its recent history include the acquisition of the valuable library of the Corfiot bibliophile Naki Pieris (1966), the publication of the Bulletin of the Reading Society (since 1969) under the presidency of Kostas Nikolakis-Mouchas, and the acquisition of a very important part of Lord Guilford’s Archive (1981).

At the turn of the 20th century, through the intensive efforts of its then Board of Directors, the Society received significant sponsorships that enabled the modernization of its infrastructure, a process that continues to this day.

In recent years, the Corfu Reading Society has been conducting research and educational programs, organizing scientific conferences and lectures on a wide range of topics, book presentations, concerts, and educational activities. Simultaneously, it is increasingly networking with other similar institutions in Greece and abroad, as well as with the academic community. The Corfu Reading Society, which currently boasts over 450 members, continues to aim at enriching and promoting both its extensive library (over 50,000 volumes, including rare editions from the 16th to 19th centuries) and its valuable collections (manuscripts, maps, newspapers, photographs, and works of art). It stands as a dynamic ark of Ionian culture, a unique institution in Greece, and a constant reference point in the cultural life of the region.
