Athens, January 11 – Greece has initiated a new phase of rail network modernization, with projects totaling 124.7 million euros included in the 2021-2027 NSRF “Transport” program. These interventions, decided by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance in cooperation with the transport ministry, are set to improve the safety, speed, and environmental performance of rail travel across the country.
Key Projects and Their Impact
A flagship project involves the completion of electrification on the new double rail line connecting Kiato to Rododafni, spanning approximately 70.6 kilometers. This route forms a crucial part of the broader Athens to Patras corridor. Beyond supporting lower emissions and quieter operations, ERGOSE, the Greek railway infrastructure company, highlights that this project incorporates measures designed to enhance the travel experience and mitigate local impacts. These include the implementation of advanced passenger information and announcement systems, as well as anti-noise barriers in selected sections.
ERGOSE further notes that the electrification of this new double line will enable faster services, with trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour, significantly reducing journey times.
Thessaloniki-Idomeni Corridor Upgrades
Simultaneously, significant upgrades are underway on the Thessaloniki to Idomeni corridor. This project focuses on installing a modern signaling and train control system along a route of approximately 70.5 kilometers. This enhancement is expected to bolster safety and service reliability on a vital link connecting Thessaloniki with the northern border area.
Benefits for Tourism and Sustainable Transport
The improved rail infrastructure is anticipated to broaden the range of mobility options available to visitors, offering more comfortable and environmentally friendly travel between urban centers and various destinations. As the demand for sustainable transport choices continues to grow, these upgrades, by enhancing reliability and journey quality, are expected to support the visitor experience. This aligns with Greece’s broader efforts to position itself as a modern and accessible tourist destination.
These investments underscore Greece’s commitment to developing its national infrastructure, aiming to provide a more efficient, safe, and sustainable transportation system for both its citizens and the increasing number of tourists visiting the country.
