Erimitis Under Threat: North Corfu Association Warns of Total Destruction
Corfu, January 29, 2026 – The Erimitis area in North Corfu is once again under severe threat of total destruction, according to an announcement from the Erimitis Plous Association. The association warns of intensified activity related to construction licensing and studies, indicating adverse developments that could irrevocably alter the region’s character.
New Investors and Unprecedented Construction Activity
Since late May 2023, NCH Capital has reportedly withdrawn from the Erimitis area, making way for new investors. This shift coincides with a period of unprecedented construction activity across the island, which is significantly altering Corfu’s character and exacerbating daily life for both residents and visitors during the summer months. This ‘development’ is not limited to the Erimitis area alone, but also affects Corfu Town, particularly its coastal front, which is increasingly falling prey to investment interests. Local government officials are reportedly boasting about this destruction, presenting it as progress.
Economic Development and Strain on Public Resources
The so-called economic development, as highlighted by the Erimitis Plous Association, does not uniformly benefit the local community. Instead, it leads to the exhaustion and misuse of public resources, including the road network, water supply, and waste management. The inability of underfunded Local Authorities to manage these resources effectively results in operational costs being passed on to citizens through exorbitant municipal fees.
Erimitis: A Vital Ecosystem at Risk
Erimitis is described by the association as one of the most fundamental elements of the island’s natural and cultural heritage. It is not merely a collection of trees, bushes, or beaches, but a complete ecosystem, a creation of nature spanning centuries that has richly endowed the region. It constitutes the microclimate of the area, its identity and character, the lifeblood of its economy, and the experiential relationship of the local community with the region from generation to generation. It is the foundation upon which the new generation can build its future in a humane environment with a high quality of life.
The potential destruction of Erimitis is certain to bring about dramatic, unpredictable changes and consequences across the entire spectrum of social and economic activity, and primarily to the quality of life. The notion that complete concrete development brings prosperity and well-being is deemed destructive. Conversely, by destroying the natural environment and irreplaceable natural resources, the added value they provide to the area is removed, leading to escalating depreciation and, ultimately, social and economic decline.
Call for Public Assembly
In light of these critical concerns, the Board of Directors of the Erimitis Plous Association has decided to convene an Open Assembly of the local Corfiot community. The assembly is scheduled for Sunday, February 8th, at 10:30 AM, in the KAPI hall at the Sinies olive press. Citizens are urged to participate in this crucial phase and express their will, as Erimitis is once again threatened with destruction. The association poses a direct question to the community: “Will we accept this, or will we react?”
The announcement comes amidst broader concerns about environmental degradation and unsustainable development practices on the island, underscoring the urgent need for collective action to protect Corfu’s natural treasures.
