The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands announced the continuation of its educational program, “Getting to Know the Old Town of Corfu.” This initiative is designed for students in the 5th and 6th grades of primary school and all grades of junior high school, aiming to connect them with the historical continuity, memory, and culture of their hometown.

Program Details and Objectives

The program involves an educational walk through the Old Town of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage site. During this walk, students learn about the concept of World Heritage and gain a deeper understanding of Corfu’s historical and cultural significance. The journey begins at the Spilia Gate, one of the former entrances to the walled city, traverses the entire town, and concludes at the Monastery of Agia Aikaterini. The Monastery houses the Coordination Service of the Historic Center, “Corfu Asty.”

At the Monastery, students participate in a knowledge game, fostering an experiential connection with Corfu’s cultural heritage, knowledge, and love for the city. This interactive approach ensures that the learning experience is both engaging and memorable for the young participants.

Participation and Contact Information

The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands extends its gratitude to the Regional Directorate of Education and its Director, Petros Angelopoulos, for their invaluable cooperation and support in this endeavor.

All educators from the 5th and 6th grades of primary school and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades of junior high school are encouraged to participate in the program. This initiative aligns with local history studies and educational walks, providing a unique opportunity for students to learn outside the traditional classroom setting.

Contact details for the program coordinator, Aliki Katsarou, who specializes in education and the interpretive presentation of Cultural Heritage, are available in the informative letter sent by the Regional Directorate of Education to all schools in the prefecture.

How to Participate: A Step-by-Step Guide

To ensure smooth participation, follow these steps:

  1. Review the Information Letter: Teachers should first consult the informative letter distributed by the Regional Directorate of Education to all schools. This letter contains essential details, including the program schedule, specific instructions, and the contact information for the program coordinator.
  2. Contact the Coordinator: Reach out to Aliki Katsarou, the program coordinator, using the contact details provided in the informative letter. She will be able to answer any questions, provide further guidance, and assist with registration.
  3. Register Your Class: Follow the registration procedures outlined by the coordinator. It’s recommended to register early, as spots may be limited.
  4. Prepare Your Students: Before the educational walk, engage your students in discussions about Corfu’s history and cultural significance to enhance their learning experience during the program.
  5. Participate in the Walk: Attend the educational walk with your students, encouraging them to actively participate in the activities and ask questions.

Important Notes for Educators:

  • Curriculum Integration: The program is designed to complement existing history and cultural studies curricula, offering a practical application of classroom learning.
  • Experiential Learning: Emphasize the experiential aspect of the program, encouraging students to observe, interact, and reflect on their surroundings.
  • Logistics: Coordinate with the program coordinator regarding transportation, meeting points, and any specific needs of your students.

This ongoing educational program represents a valuable opportunity for the youth of Corfu to connect with their heritage and develop a deeper appreciation for the unique cultural landscape of their island.
