Decentralized Administration Signs Contracts to Combat Water Scarcity on Ionian Islands

Corfu, February 14 – The Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, Western Greece, and the Ionian has taken a significant step towards addressing critical water management issues by signing three contracts for studies on salinization and drought. These initiatives are specifically designed for the islands of Corfu, Lefkada, and Kefalonia.

Addressing Salinization and Drought

The contracts, signed by the Decentralized Administration, focus on implementing studies for the “Delimitation of Salinization Zones” and the “Preparation of a Strategic Plan to Combat Water Scarcity and Drought Phenomena” in Corfu, Lefkada, and Kefalonia.

Salinization is recognized as an escalating environmental pollution issue that degrades the quality of groundwater and agricultural land. The studies are intended to provide essential tools for maintaining both the quantitative and, crucially, the qualitative state of groundwater resources. These resources are vital as they constitute the primary water supply for the citizens and economic activities across the aforementioned islands.

Importance of Groundwater Protection

The protection of groundwater is paramount for the sustainability of these islands. The comprehensive studies will enable authorities to develop targeted strategies and implement effective measures to mitigate the effects of salinization and prolonged drought periods. This proactive approach aims to safeguard the long-term water security for both residents and the thriving tourism industry.

Impact on Local Communities and Economy

The Ionian Islands, particularly Corfu, Lefkada, and Kefalonia, rely heavily on their groundwater reserves for daily consumption and agricultural needs. The degradation of these resources due to salinization and drought poses a significant threat to public health and the local economy. By investing in these studies, the Decentralized Administration seeks to ensure a stable and high-quality water supply, thereby supporting the continued development and prosperity of these communities.

This initiative is a testament to the commitment of the Decentralized Administration to environmental protection and sustainable resource management in the Ionian region.
