The aroma of anticipation hangs in the air, a blend of freshly brewed coffee and nervous excitement. It’s not a scene from a romantic comedy, but a typical evening at a singles event in Athens, where the digital divide is slowly giving way to genuine human connection. Forget the endless swiping and curated profiles; a new wave of Athenians is rediscovering the art of offline flirting, fueled by a desire for authentic encounters.
The Valentine’s Day Shift: From Red Roses to Real Connections
For years, Valentine’s Day in Greece has been synonymous with red roses, candlelit dinners for two, and a subtle pressure to be overtly romantic. For singles, it often meant a quiet night in, far from the clichés. But 2026 marks a shift. In Athens, a burgeoning trend of events exclusively for singles is redefining how people approach romance, not just on February 14th, but year-round.
This isn’t a desperate last-minute scramble, but a conscious decision to put down the phone and return to where it all began: the bar, personal contact, the meaningful glance. While Valentine’s Day serves as a perfect excuse to step out of one’s comfort zone, these events are now a regular fixture, a reminder that the need for connection isn’t confined to a single day.
Beyond the Algorithm: The Visionaries Behind the Movement
Queen.gr spoke with the pioneers of this movement, the individuals behind “Thursday|Athens” and “s.o.m.e.t.h.i.n.g. m.o.r.e.”, who explained why offline flirting is the new cool. Jeronimo Rasc, Brand Manager for Thursday Dating in Greece, shared the genesis of his idea:
“It was a need I saw emerging to help my friends, but then it was also a realization that people need to connect in person and not electronically. At the same time, it was a need to return to real life, away from algorithms.”
Rasc emphasized the desire to move beyond superficial judgments based on profile pictures and endless messaging. “We had to move away from this superficial perception of judging a person by their photo and constantly communicating through messages, and go to a real experience where you can see who is around you, have effortless conversations, and simply meet ‘real’ people, and that’s it.”
Curated Connections: Age Filters and Shared Experiences
One common concern about singles events is the potential for significant age differences. However, Rasc assured us that “Thursday|Athens” addresses this by requiring online ticket purchases where participants declare their age and gender. Events are then filtered by age. For instance, a recent padel club event was tailored for individuals aged 25-40.
The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive. George, 33, shared his experience: “It was important for me to be here because it was an event for singles, so it’s easier to open up to others because you know for sure they are single. You don’t have to approach someone who isn’t single. Since I’ve been to other events by this organizer, there’s no awkwardness, because everyone has gone there to talk. 9 out of 10 have gone alone – not with a friend – and that’s why not talking to someone is the awkward thing, not the other way around.”
Ellie, 30, added, “I wanted to try padel and I didn’t have anyone to come with, so I saw this event, I’m also single, and I said ‘why not?’. It was a nice experience, although I would have liked more rotation in the pairs (referring to singles being randomly paired for padel). But I would go again to something like this, especially when it includes an activity.”
Celebrating Possibilities: The True Spirit of Valentine’s Day
Rasc believes that Valentine’s Day shouldn’t just celebrate existing relationships, but the possibilities of finding love. “For us, being single is a superpower. What a beautiful day to celebrate, to celebrate love and the possibility of finding love. We don’t always have to celebrate what already exists, but what can come. And that’s what we do on Valentine’s Day.”
He firmly believes that offline interaction fosters authenticity. “Of course! We all start or manage to create an online persona either on social media or dating apps, following ideas and themes. In real life, there are no filters. You come as you are.” Rasc foresees a future where these events become a cornerstone of dating, driven by a broader societal shift. “Generally, we are experiencing a transition from technology to reality. People want to have real experiences, so this will evolve and expand into the field of dating as well.”
“Something More”: A Platform Born from a Need for Connection
Despina Petridou, the organizer of singles events for “s.o.m.e.t.h.i.n.g. m.o.r.e.”, echoed Rasc’s sentiments. Her platform, though new, has already hosted numerous successful events. “The idea came from seeing so many wonderful people around me being single for a long time without wanting to be. In all our discussions on this issue, one thing is constantly heard: since there are so many single people, why are there so many single people? Something had to be done about it, and I decided to do it myself!”
Similar to “Thursday|Athens”, “s.o.m.e.t.h.i.n.g. m.o.r.e.” requires online ticket purchases for events, which are primarily held in bars. This ensures a balanced ratio of men to women and age-appropriate groupings. “We book a nice venue and encourage singles to book their ticket and come have a drink with an open mind for new acquaintances. It’s that simple! Without any pressure, without promises and expectations. We make sure it’s as balanced as possible by having 2 types of tickets (Female & Male) and checking all participations before they are approved. Regarding ages, because we saw that it’s something that concerns many people, each of our events now caters to a specific age range.”
Overcoming Awkwardness: Normalizing Singles Events
Petridou acknowledges that attendees often arrive with a degree of awkwardness and shyness, but she finds that most overcome it quickly. “They come with full awkwardness and shyness, as is natural, but the pleasant thing is that the majority overcome it after a while. There is certainly still the mentality of ‘I hope no one sees me’ and we still have a long way to go until people realize that there is nothing more normal than a single person going to events to meet people who are in the same phase. It’s nice to know what you want and do something about it. Here I must tell you that I have had cases where I talked to a shop and when I mentioned the concept, they told me it seemed a bit strange. That’s why, let’s normalize going to singles events. Please!”
She has witnessed firsthand how people who might have swiped left on each other online find genuine chemistry in person. “Yes, I have seen it, and it’s really so nice to see people having an open mind and giving opportunities. The energy and chemistry when you meet someone in person cannot exist in any digital acquaintance. Life is out there!”
For singles who dread Valentine’s Day, Petridou offers a clear solution: face your fears head-on. “We’re in this together, and singles events deserve your attention. Even if we love solitude, loneliness is hard, and we don’t want it. That’s why it’s important to be open to this ‘party’ called life!” She, like Rasc, believes offline interaction promotes authenticity. “The only sure thing. Here we don’t even have a ‘dress code’.”
Looking five years ahead, Petridou is optimistic. “Let me answer better what will happen in 5 months? We will see singles events everywhere! Dating apps are a substitute. Would anyone choose them if they really had the option? We are now thirsty for connection. Especially for those of us who lived before social media, nostalgia has hit red. Offline is here to stay!”
When asked for a final choice between “Swipe Right or Say Hi?”, both Rasc and Petridou responded with “both,” with Petridou adding that it’s crucial to know what you’re looking for.
The message from Athens is clear: the future of dating is looking less like a screen and more like a real-life conversation, a shared laugh, and the simple, undeniable spark of human connection.
