CulturePolis Marks Two Decades of European Cultural Engagement from Corfu, Launches CorfuGen Initiative
Corfu, June 4, 2026 – CulturePolis, a prominent non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Corfu, Greece, is celebrating its 20th anniversary, reflecting on two decades of impactful European cultural projects and partnerships. The milestone is accompanied by the launch of CorfuGen, a new center dedicated to culture, sustainability, and innovation on the island.
Established on June 5, 2006, as the ‘Forum of the Europe of Cultures: Adriatic-Ionian Branch,’ the organization was founded by a small group of collaborators led by Vassilis Laopodis, an official from the European Commission. In 2013, it was officially renamed CulturePolis, a name that reflects the synergy of Western culture (‘Culture’) with its Greek dimension (‘Polis’ – Citizen – Culture) and facilitates international communication.
A Journey of European Collaboration and Impact
Over the past two decades, CulturePolis has evolved into one of the most active civil society organizations in the region. Its achievements include:
- Over 50 implemented projects: The vast majority of these projects have been co-financed by competitive European programs such as Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, Creative Europe, and Interreg.
- A network of over 300 partners: Collaborations span more than 30 countries, encompassing municipalities, universities, research centers, chambers of commerce, businesses, and civil society organizations.
The choice of Corfu as its headquarters was deliberate, recognizing the island as a crossroads of peoples, history, and cultures. CulturePolis was born with the vision of elevating the region into a hub for meaningful European cultural dialogue and a driver of innovation.
CorfuGen: A New Chapter for Culture, Sustainability, and Innovation
The 20th anniversary is not merely a moment for reflection but also a new beginning. The culmination of this journey is the creation of CorfuGen, a Center for Culture, Sustainability, and Innovation. CorfuGen is set to launch its first public program in the summer of 2026 across five locations on the island. This initiative will involve not only CulturePolis staff but also a team of young volunteers who have chosen to remain and create within their local community.
The organization’s team expressed profound gratitude to all who have supported them over the past two decades in Corfu, the Ionian Islands, the rest of Greece, and across European Union countries. They extended thanks to past and present board members, executives, employees, as well as local government bodies, state services, universities, chambers, media, businesses, and civil society organizations that contributed to achieving their goals. Above all, they thanked the people of the local communities of Corfu, who have trusted and supported them.
“For 20 years, we have strived to honor the history of this place, bringing an air of innovation. We continue with the same persistence, because now we are making a new restart,” stated the organization.
CulturePolis is registered as a Civil Non-Profit Company (GEMI) since 2025 and operates according to articles 741 et seq. of the Greek Civil Code.
