NEW YORK – The Korakiana Philharmonic from Corfu created a memorable impression during its inaugural participation in the Greek Independence Day celebrations in New York. The musical ensemble, comprising over 80 musicians led by conductor Kostas Zervopoulos, performed at various central events, culminating in a grand parade on 5th Avenue.
Historic Debut in the Big Apple
On Friday, April 24, 2026, the Korakiana Philharmonic participated in the official flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green in Manhattan. Following this, they were central to events held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at Ground Zero, where an official doxology took place.
The highlight of their visit occurred on Sunday, April 26, when the Philharmonic paraded down 5th Avenue, leading the large Greek diaspora parade. Their performance earned enthusiastic applause, particularly as they accompanied the Evzones of the Presidential Guard, who received the warmest reception. The Philharmonic also provided musical accompaniment for other parade sections.
Distinguished Guests and Cultural Diplomacy
Beyond the thousands of Greek expatriates, the events were attended by prominent figures including Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, senators, and representatives from New York authorities. The Hellenic Republic was officially represented by the President of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, accompanied by members of the Greek Parliament.
The Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Ioannis Trepeklis, also attended, highly commending the Korakiana Philharmonic’s participation as an ambassador of the cultural tradition of the Ionian Islands. The celebrations also featured a traditional dance group from Larissa and a delegation from the Municipality of Messolonghi, as the events coincided with the 200th anniversary of the heroic Exodus of Messolonghi.
A Tradition of Corfiot Music in the USA
This marked the fourth occasion a Corfiot Philharmonic has performed in the United States for diaspora events. Previous visits included the Corfu Philharmonic Society in 1995 and 2024, and the ‘Mantzaros’ Philharmonic Society in 2019, underscoring a rich tradition of musical exchange.
The participation of the Korakiana Philharmonic not only enriched the Greek Independence Day celebrations but also served as a powerful cultural bridge, showcasing the vibrant musical heritage of Corfu to an international audience.
