Corfu Bolsters Security with Swearing-In of 70 New Border Guards
Corfu, June 2 – Seventy new border guards were officially sworn in today at the Corfu Police Headquarters, out of a total of 86 recruits. This event signifies a crucial development for the security and efficient operation of the Police Services and Corfu Airport. This represents the largest human resources reinforcement the Corfu Police Directorate has received in recent years, following a call for new border guards.
Significant Reinforcement for Airport and Police Services
The new recruits will be deployed to both the “Ioannis Kapodistrias” Airport (36 personnel) and the services of the Corfu Police Directorate (50 personnel). This substantial increase in staffing is expected to significantly upgrade the security services provided to both citizens and the millions of visitors to the island.
Deputy Minister Highlights Importance of New Recruits
On the occasion of the swearing-in ceremony, Stefanos Gikas, Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy and New Democracy MP for Corfu, stated, “Today marks an important milestone for Corfu. The swearing-in of the first 70 new border guards confirms that a great effort we started over a year ago is yielding tangible results.”
He further emphasized, “The reinforcement of the Corfu Police Directorate and the ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Airport with new personnel is the largest staffing enhancement in recent decades and will substantially contribute to upgrading the security services provided to citizens and the millions of visitors to our island.”
Congratulations and Future Outlook
Mr. Gikas congratulated the new border guards on their success and wished them health, strength in their training, and a successful career. He also extended his warm thanks to the political leadership of the Ministry of Citizen Protection and Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis for their excellent cooperation and practical response to Corfu’s long-standing requests.
“We speak through deeds and actions, with measurable results that improve the daily lives of citizens and enhance the security of the Corfu Regional Unit,” concluded Mr. Gikas.
This significant influx of new personnel is anticipated to address existing staffing shortages and improve the overall effectiveness of law enforcement and border control on the island, especially during peak tourist seasons.
