The Hellenic Police (ELAS) continues its checks and informational activities through Traffic Services, regional Police Departments, and Traffic Accident Control and Prevention Teams (O.E.P.T.A.) in Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Lefkada. These efforts are part of the ‘Zero Tolerance for Non-Helmet Use’ campaign, aiming for universal compliance among drivers and passengers of two-wheelers, as well as users of Light Personal Electric Vehicles (LPEVs).

Campaign Results: 138 Violations in One Week

During the 20th week of the campaign, from November 10 to November 16, 2025, a total of 669 checks were conducted. These checks resulted in 138 violations for not wearing a protective helmet. The breakdown of violations by island is as follows:

  • Corfu: 83 violations
  • Zakynthos: 28 violations
  • Kefalonia: 14 violations
  • Lefkada: 13 violations

These violations involved 121 drivers (92 on two-wheelers, 19 on LPEVs, 7 delivery service workers, and 3 on ATV ‘gourounes’ vehicles) and 17 passengers.

New Traffic Code: Stricter Penalties for Non-Helmet Use

It is emphasized that with the establishment of the new Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), the state sends a clear message of zero tolerance towards non-helmet use through stricter penalties:

  • For the driver of a two-wheeler: 350 euros fine and suspension of the driving license for 30 days. (The same penalties apply to drivers who do not ensure the safety of their passenger).
  • For the passenger of a two-wheeler: 350 euros fine.
  • For the driver of an LPEV: 30 euros fine.

It is noted that in cases of repeat offenses, the penalties increase significantly.

Beyond Penalties: Promoting Responsible Driving Behavior

The campaign’s objective is not merely to impose penalties but to change the perception of drivers and passengers regarding the mandatory use of certified helmets as a fundamental measure for life protection. ELAS services are present on the roads daily, with a strong and consistent presence, to ensure the universal application of mandatory helmet use and to establish more responsible driving behavior.

As the campaign slogan states: “The machine is freedom – the helmet is life.”
