Corfu Old Town Buildings Pose Safety Risk, Residents Demand Action

Corfu, January 12 – Residents of Corfu’s Old Town are sounding the alarm over the precarious state of many historic buildings, some dating back two to three centuries. The picturesque alleys and architecturally significant structures, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are increasingly posing a safety risk as plaster and even marble fragments detach from facades.

Concerns Mount Over Deteriorating UNESCO Site

The Old Town of Corfu, renowned for its charm and unique architecture, is a major tourist attraction. However, the structural integrity of its historic buildings has become a complex issue. Incidents of falling debris have caused considerable concern among permanent residents and authorities alike. The primary challenge lies in the maintenance and restoration of these buildings, a process complicated by their UNESCO World Heritage status.

According to George Zoumbos, president of the Old Town Permanent Residents’ Association, the age of the buildings – some two to three centuries old – combined with numerous interventions over time, has led to a relatively dangerous situation for some. He highlighted that the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities often blocks permits for repairs due to existing illegal modifications, which in turn hinders the progress of necessary works.

Meeting with Municipal Authorities and Stakeholders

In response to growing resident concerns, a meeting was held today, January 12, at the Mayor’s office with the Mayor of Central Corfu, technical services of the Municipality, the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, and the Technical Chamber’s branch. The discussion aimed to address the critical issue of building safety and explore potential solutions.

Mr. Zoumbos, speaking on the ERT3 show “Perimetro,” emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach. During the meeting, the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities clarified certain procedures necessary for any work to proceed. The Municipality also put forward proposals, the implementation of which will be evaluated in the coming period.

Lack of Building Regulations and Funding Challenges

One significant obstacle identified is the absence of building regulations in many of the old structures. This lack of formal frameworks complicates direct communication among residents and hinders access to potential funding protocols for repairs. The Municipality has pledged to address this issue, with further developments expected in the near future.

The residents’ association had previously urged the Municipality of Central Corfu to take charge of the situation and convene a meeting with all relevant stakeholders to find a solution to the problem, which endangers physical safety.

Historical Context and Ongoing Challenges

Corfu’s Old Town, with its Venetian, French, and British influences, boasts a rich architectural heritage. However, the preservation of this heritage requires significant financial investment and adherence to strict conservation protocols. The involvement of the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities ensures that any interventions are carried out according to specific procedures and protocols, which are often time-consuming and costly.

The ongoing dialogue between residents, municipal authorities, and heritage bodies is crucial for safeguarding both the architectural legacy of Corfu Old Town and the safety of its inhabitants and visitors. The outcome of these discussions and the subsequent actions taken will determine the future of this iconic UNESCO site.
