Defibrillator Donated to Central Corfu Municipality

Corfu, January 15, 2026 – The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands today installed a wall-mounted digital defibrillator in Garitsa Grove (on the exterior wall of “TO ALSOS” cafeteria). The device was donated in memory of cardiologist Antonis Draganigos, who recently passed away, leaving a significant mark on the local community.

The defibrillator is a donation from the family of the deceased, with the contribution of many fellow citizens, transforming a loss into an act of life and offering to society.

A Collective Effort for Public Safety

The installation of the defibrillator was attended by the family of the deceased, Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos, Deputy Mayor for Health Christos Skourtis, and Deputy Mayor for Cleanliness Pantelis Giannoulis.

With great emotion, his daughter, physician Christina Draganigou, stated: “With the contribution of the people who honored us with their presence at the last farewell to the earthly life of my beloved father Antonis Draganigos, we managed to donate an automatic defibrillator to the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands. Throughout his career as a doctor, he offered to the local community. So, as a family, we chose to keep his memory alive through a process he knew best of all: saving lives. Today it is placed in the Garitsa Grove area, and a second donation to the Municipality of South Corfu is expected. Even if one life is saved, we have won…”

Expanding the Municipality’s Defibrillator Network

It is reminded that the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands has also procured and installed an additional twenty defibrillators in key and busy locations, ensuring immediate accessibility in emergencies, thereby enhancing the sense of security for both residents and visitors to the island.

In the second phase, the Municipality plans to train volunteers and familiarize citizens with the use of defibrillators so that they can provide first aid in critical moments when every minute counts. The training seminars will be held in cooperation with local communities and EKAV (National Center for Emergency Aid).

The areas where defibrillators have been installed to date include: Corfu Town (Marasleio, Garitsa, Anemomylos, Kanoni, BP Gas Station Eth. Antistaseos), Alepou, Agios Ioannis, Kompitsio, Pelekas, Sinarades, Giannades, Kato Korakiana, Spartylas, Agios Markos, Lakones, Makrades, Kynopiastes, Stavros, Kato Garouna, and Viros.

In the coming days, three more defibrillators are to be installed on the Diapontia Islands.
