CORFU. The discussion surrounding hydrocarbon exploration in the Northwestern Ionian Sea has entered a new phase, with Corfu now attempting to form a local front of resistance. An open meeting was held at the Corfu Labor Center on Wednesday, June 10, following an initiative by the Environmental Protection Association, focusing on coordinating actions against exploration and drilling plans in the region.
Concerns Over Environmental Impact
Citizens and representatives of various collectives and organizations participated in the meeting, expressing their concern about the potential environmental, economic, and social impacts that extractive activities could have on the Ionian Sea. It was highlighted that the local economy relies heavily on tourism, fishing, and activities connected to the marine environment, which, according to participants, makes the issue of protection particularly critical.
The meeting took place during a period of continuous developments concerning the so-called “Block 2” in the Northwestern Ionian. In April, the agreement paving the way for exploratory drilling was signed, while the consortium responsible for the concession is proceeding with the second phase of research, with the prospect of conducting the first drilling in four decades by 2027.
From Protest to Blocking Drilling
According to the Environmental Protection Association, the goal is not merely to register disagreement, but to move “from simple and harmless protest to blocking any plan for offshore hydrocarbon drilling.” Participants emphasized that this initiative is only the beginning of a broader information and mobilization campaign, aiming to expand participation throughout the island.
“We are not complacent. This was just the beginning, and the continuation must be with even larger gatherings and mobilizations,” stated the Association in its announcement, stressing that “the protection of the Ionian is everyone’s business.”
Documentary Screening and Future Actions
As part of the event, the documentary “Water and Oil” was also screened with permission from The Press Project, for which the organizers publicly expressed their gratitude. This initial meeting signals a determined effort by Corfu residents and environmental groups to actively resist the hydrocarbon drilling plans. The success of their campaign will depend on their ability to sustain momentum and garner wider support across the island and beyond.
The movement aims to raise public awareness about the potential risks, including oil spills, damage to marine ecosystems, and the long-term impact on the region’s vital tourism and fishing industries. Organizers plan to hold more public meetings, protests, and educational events to inform and mobilize the community against the drilling operations.
The coalition of local groups and citizens hopes to influence policy decisions and ultimately halt the exploration and extraction of hydrocarbons in the Ionian Sea, preserving its natural beauty and economic sustainability for future generations. The ongoing efforts reflect a growing global trend of local communities taking direct action to protect their environments from industrial exploitation.
