Corfu Deputy Mayor Urges Landowners to Clear Properties by June 15 for Fire Prevention
Corfu, April 29 – Makis Poulimenos, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection of the Central Corfu Municipality, has issued a public statement urging all property owners, possessors, and usufructuaries of plots and undeveloped areas – both within and outside the city’s urban plan – to undertake the mandatory cleaning of their properties by June 15, 2026. This directive comes in anticipation of the fire season, which officially commences on May 1 and concludes on October 31, 2026, aiming to mitigate the risk of fires caused by dry grass and flammable materials.
Mandatory Cleaning Requirements
The required cleaning operations encompass several key actions:
- Removal of dry grass and other vegetation.
- Pruning of trees and removal of hazardous branches.
- Clearing of flammable materials and waste.
These measures are deemed essential to create a safer environment and reduce the potential for fire outbreaks across the island.
Penalties for Non-Compliance and Reporting Procedures
Non-compliance with this directive will result in fines. Furthermore, the municipality reserves the right to carry out the cleaning work itself, with the costs subsequently charged to the property owner. This proactive approach underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are treating fire prevention this year.
Property owners are required to declare their compliance through the digital platform akatharista.gov.gr. For individuals who may face difficulties using electronic means, an alternative option is available: physical submission of declarations at Citizen Service Centers (KEP) or the Fire Department. However, this alternative is primarily intended for specific groups, including individuals over 67 years of age, citizens with disabilities (certified by KEPA), or in cases of force majeure.
Importance of Community Participation
Deputy Mayor Poulimenos stressed the collective responsibility in ensuring a safe fire season. “The timely clearing of properties is not just a legal obligation but a vital step in protecting our community and natural environment from the devastating effects of wildfires,” he stated. “We urge all citizens to comply with these regulations to ensure a safe summer for everyone on Corfu.”
The municipality is committed to supporting residents in understanding and fulfilling their obligations, providing necessary information and resources to facilitate the cleaning process. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance civil protection measures and build resilience against natural disasters.
Residents are encouraged to seek clarification from municipal services or the Fire Department if they have any questions regarding the cleaning requirements or the declaration process. The success of these preventative measures relies heavily on the active participation and cooperation of all landowners in Corfu.
