The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has once again solidified its standing as Greece’s premier academic institution, according to the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026. The university has been placed in the 401-500 band globally, demonstrating a consistent upward trend in recent years.
NKUA’s Strong Performance in Specific Fields
Beyond its overall ranking, NKUA exhibits particularly robust performance in several key academic disciplines. In both Medical Sciences, and Arts & Humanities, Law, and Psychology, the university secured placements within the 301-400 band, highlighting its excellence in these areas.
Other Greek Universities Also Shine
Four other Greek universities have also achieved commendable positions in the global rankings. The University of Crete and Harokopio University were both ranked in the 601-800 band. Furthermore, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) were placed in the 801-1000 band, underscoring the growing recognition of Greek higher education on the international stage.
THE Ranking Methodology
The Times Higher Education rankings employ a comprehensive methodology, evaluating institutions across eleven distinct subject areas. This assessment is based on eighteen performance indicators that meticulously measure various aspects of university excellence, including teaching quality, research environment, the impact and quality of research, industry knowledge transfer, and the institution’s international outlook.
Global Trends in Higher Education Rankings
Globally, the United States continues to lead, topping eight out of eleven subject categories. Notably, MIT holds the top position in three sectors: Arts & Humanities, Business & Economics, and Social Sciences. The United Kingdom also maintains a strong presence, securing the top spot in three fields, with the University of Cambridge re-claiming the #1 position for Psychology for the first time since 2022.
China has demonstrated remarkable growth, entering the Top 10 for Computer Science and Physical Sciences. It now boasts seven Top 10 spots across all categories, a significant increase from four last year. Continental Europe remains a formidable competitor, with ETH Zurich ranking 3rd in Computer Science and 9th in Physical Sciences. Australia also saw the University of Melbourne return to the global Top 10 for Law, securing an impressive 8th place.
This strong showing by Greek universities, particularly NKUA, reflects a concerted effort to enhance academic excellence and research output, contributing to the country’s growing reputation in the global higher education landscape.
