Athens, Greece – A compelling new group exhibition, “Athens Under Pressure,” is poised to open its doors at the FokiaNou Art Space, bringing together the perspectives of 31 artists on the profound transformations currently reshaping the Greek capital. The exhibition, running from December 3 to December 20, 2025, delves into the critical issues of climate change, overtourism, and relentless urban development, prompting viewers to consider their impact on daily life and the city’s collective experience.
Athens in Flux: Climate Crisis and Environmental Degradation
Athens is a city in constant evolution, grappling with significant environmental shifts. The climate crisis, marked by drought, wildfires, and tree diseases, is visibly altering the urban landscape. Iconic trees such as palm trees, plane trees, mulberry trees, pine trees, and cypresses are disappearing, replaced by an increasingly arid and hot environment. This ecological transformation poses serious questions about the city’s future and the well-being of its inhabitants.
The Dual Strain: Overtourism and Unchecked Urban Growth
Adding to the environmental strain, Athens is also experiencing the intense pressures of overtourism and unchecked urban development. The city, already burdened, is struggling under the sheer volume of visitors, leading to a palpable shift in neighborhood character and the displacement of long-term residents. New apartment buildings and hotel complexes are rapidly emerging across the basin, consuming precious open spaces and further intensifying the urban sprawl. This relentless expansion raises concerns about sustainability, community identity, and the quality of life for Athenians.
Art as a Mirror: Responding to a City at a Crossroads
The “Athens Under Pressure” exhibition emerged from an open call by FokiaNou Art Space, inviting artists of all mediums to engage creatively with these pressing themes. This initiative fostered a collective artistic dialogue, exploring the city’s environmental, social, spatial, and psychological shifts. The exhibition encourages the public to reflect on how these intertwined challenges affect their lives, their daily routines, their psychology, and their shared experience of Athens.
Can art truly articulate what we are living through? Can it raise awareness, mobilize action, and help us breathe again in unison with the city? Through a diverse collection of works that document, comment, resist, or envision, “Athens Under Pressure” offers multiple perspectives on a city at a critical juncture – a city changing faster than we can fully comprehend.
