Athens Train Stations Set for Long-Overdue Upgrade

Athens, February 18, 2026 – The transformation of the adjacent Larissis and Peloponnisou train stations, situated in a central part of Athens, is moving into its implementation phase. This ambitious urban regeneration project aims to upgrade and modernize the capital’s two side-by-side train stations, which have long been considered antiquated and dilapidated.

Expressions of Interest Phase Commences

The project has officially commenced its non-binding expressions of interest phase. This marks a significant step towards the realization of a modern and multifunctional transport hub in the heart of Athens. The initiative is being tendered by GAIAOSE, the state-owned company responsible for managing and exploiting real estate and property belonging to the national railroad network.

Current State of the Stations

Currently, both Larissis and Peloponnisou stations are in a state of disrepair. Larissis station, the largest railway station in the country, has been described as reminiscent of provisional rail stations built in the 1960s in the eastern bloc. It serves the active network connecting Athens with major cities and towns north of the capital along the eastern seaboard, as well as international connections.

The older Peloponnisou station, located across the tracks from Larissis, features neoclassical architecture but is also in a moderate state of disrepair. This station provides rail connections between the greater Athens-Piraeus region and the Peloponnese.

Vision for a Modern Transport Hub

The urban regeneration project envisions a unified train station zone covering an area of approximately 100,000 square meters. The upgraded hub is designed to accommodate multiple uses, including retail stores, tourism units, student housing, office space, and cultural infrastructure. This comprehensive approach aims to create a vibrant and integrated urban space that will serve both travelers and the local community.

Impact on Athens’ Infrastructure

This modernization effort is part of a broader push to enhance Athens’ infrastructure and improve public services. The upgrade of these key transport hubs is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for thousands of daily commuters and tourists, while also contributing to the economic and cultural revitalization of central Athens.

The project aligns with the city’s long-term development goals, seeking to create a more connected and efficient urban environment. The improved facilities are anticipated to attract further investment and development in the surrounding areas, fostering a positive ripple effect throughout the capital.

Further details regarding the project timeline and specific development plans are expected to be released as the expressions of interest phase progresses and the tender process moves forward.
