Major Drug Trafficking Network Dismantled in Athens

Athens, February 7 – Authorities in Athens announced Friday the dismantling of a significant criminal organization involved in trafficking cocaine, heroin, and raw cannabis across the greater Athens area. The extensive police operation, carried out on Thursday, February 6, resulted in the arrest of six individuals, including the alleged leader of the group, a 66-yearold woman with a history of 14 prior police incidents.

The operation, a culmination of detailed intelligence work, data verification, and suspect profiling, confirmed the organization’s widespread criminal activities. Police interventions spanned multiple locations within Athens, including central Athens, Keratea, Peristeri, Nea Smyrni, and Agios Dimitrios, underscoring the network’s broad reach.

Extensive Seizures and Evidence Collection

Searches conducted at the suspects’ homes and on their persons yielded substantial evidence, highlighting the scale of the trafficking operation. The seized items included nearly €17,200 in cash, over 1.4 kilograms of heroin, almost 470 grams of raw cannabis, approximately 50 grams of cocaine, and nearly 60 grams of liquid methadone. Additionally, authorities confiscated over 6.7 kilograms of powders of unknown chemical composition, suggesting a sophisticated mixing or cutting operation.

Beyond the narcotics, police also seized two cars, a motorcycle, 107 cartridges, nine precision electronic scales – indicative of drug packaging and distribution – six mobile phones, and numerous nylon packages used for drug concealment and transport. These findings paint a clear picture of a well-organized and equipped criminal enterprise.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

The arrested individuals, some of whom have had previous encounters with law enforcement for similar offenses, now face serious charges. These include participation in a criminal organization, as well as multiple violations of drug and weapons laws. Following their arrests, they have been handed over to the competent prosecutorial authority to face justice.

This successful operation marks a significant blow to drug trafficking activities within the Attica region, demonstrating the Hellenic Police’s commitment to combating organized crime and ensuring public safety. The dismantling of such a network is crucial in disrupting the supply chain of illicit substances and protecting communities from their harmful effects.

The swift and effective action by Athens authorities underscores the ongoing efforts to tackle drug-related crime and maintain law and order in the metropolitan area. Investigations are expected to continue as authorities work to uncover any further connections or individuals involved in this extensive network.
