Athens Metro Line 2 Faces Nightly Closures for Upgrades
Athens, March 16 – Commuters in Athens are advised to prepare for significant disruptions to metro services on Line 2, as several key stations will close early each night for essential maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The closures, announced by STASY, the metro network operator, will affect services from Sunday, March 16, through Saturday, March 23.
The affected stations on Line 2 include Omonia, Panepistimio, Syntagma, and Acropolis. These stations will cease operations at 9:40 PM, approximately two and a half hours earlier than their usual closing time. The early closures are necessary to facilitate crucial rail replacement works and the installation of a new 5G network across the metro system.
Impact on Metro Line 2 Services
During the period of these works, trains on Line 2 will operate on a modified schedule and route. Services will be available only between Anthoupoli and Metaxourgeio, and between Elliniko and Syngrou-Fix. This means that passengers traveling through the central Athens area will need to seek alternative transportation methods during the late evening hours.
It is important to note that while Syntagma station on Line 2 will be affected, its services for Line 3, running from Dimotiko Theatro to Athens International Airport, will remain operational. Similarly, Omonia station will continue to serve trains on Line 1, which operates between Kifissia and Piraeus, despite the closure of its Line 2 platforms.
Reasons Behind the Disruptions
STASY emphasized that these works are vital for enhancing the safety, efficiency, and technological capabilities of the Athens metro system. The rail replacement is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the network’s infrastructure, ensuring smooth and reliable service for millions of passengers annually. The installation of the 5G network is a forward-looking initiative aimed at improving connectivity for commuters and modernizing the overall metro experience.
Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, especially during the affected evening hours. STASY has advised passengers to consult their website or local transport information for real-time updates and alternative travel options. Information on bus and tram services that can serve as alternatives to the closed metro sections is expected to be made available.
Previous Disruptions and Future Outlook
This period of disruption follows other recent incidents affecting Athens’ public transport, including footraces causing havoc in the city center and ongoing discussions regarding the regulation of electric scooter use and parking. The city is also in the process of approving studies for a municipal transport network, indicating a broader effort to modernize and streamline urban mobility.
Despite challenges such as fewer routes and kilometers, the Athens metro continues to see an increase in passenger numbers, underscoring the critical role it plays in the city’s daily life. These current works, while inconvenient in the short term, are part of a larger strategy to meet the growing demands of urban transport and provide a more advanced and reliable service for the future.
STASY has not yet indicated if further disruptions will be necessary beyond March 23, but commuters are advised to stay informed about potential future announcements regarding ongoing infrastructure projects.
