Athens, Greece – The Greek government is embarking on a substantial modernization program for the Line 1 urban rail network in Athens. This initiative will involve the full reconstruction of 14 historic trains, with the goal of significantly improving service frequency and the overall passenger experience by 2027.
Historic Trains Undergo Comprehensive Reconstruction
The upgrade program, unveiled by Alternate Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis at the Sepolia depot, targets trains that have been operational on the Athens network since the early 1980s. This project aims to rejuvenate one of the capital’s busiest urban rail lines, thereby enhancing daily travel conditions for residents, commuters, and tourists alike.
According to the Transport Ministry, this intervention is more than a mere refurbishment; it entails a comprehensive mechanical and technological reconstruction. This extensive overhaul is projected to extend the operational life of these trains by at least 25 years.
The first fully reconstructed train is anticipated to enter service in July 2026, with three additional trains slated for completion by the end of the same year. This phased approach will allow for a gradual integration of the modernized fleet.
Increased Service Frequency and Enhanced Connectivity
A key outcome of this project is the expected reduction in service intervals. For the first time in over two decades, service intervals are projected to decrease from 8.5 minutes to 5 minutes. This improvement will significantly enhance connectivity across crucial areas of Athens and along the coastal front, facilitating smoother and quicker commutes for thousands of daily passengers.
Extensive Passenger and Technology Upgrades
The trains, originally introduced between 1983 and 1985, will retain only their foundational metal body structure. All other critical systems and interiors will be entirely replaced. The scope of the overhaul is extensive, encompassing:
- New propulsion systems
- Upgraded electrical and pneumatic systems
- Modern air conditioning units
- Advanced passenger information screens
- State-of-the-art CCTV systems for enhanced security
Furthermore, the modernized trains will feature accessibility upgrades to better accommodate passengers with disabilities. The interiors will also undergo a complete renovation, incorporating energy-efficient LED lighting and new, comfortable seating arrangements.
The implementation of this ambitious program is being overseen by STASY, the urban rail operator. Spanish manufacturer CAF has been entrusted with carrying out the reconstruction works at their facilities in Volos. Funding for this vital infrastructure project is being provided through the EU-backed National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) program, underscoring its importance for regional development and sustainable transport.
In parallel with this initiative, authorities are also working on upgrading older Athens Metro trains. These efforts are primarily focused on improving air conditioning systems and enhancing passenger information displays, ensuring a more comfortable and informative travel experience across the entire metro network.
This modernization effort represents a significant investment in Athens’ public transportation infrastructure, promising a more efficient, comfortable, and accessible urban rail experience for all users.
