Athens Implements New Technology to Combat Ticket Evasion and Improve Public Transport

Athens is taking a significant leap forward in modernizing its public transportation system with the implementation of advanced technology designed to combat ticket evasion and enhance overall service quality. The new system, which leverages cameras and artificial intelligence, is expected to not only increase revenue but also improve the efficiency of the city’s public transport network.

AI and Cameras to Combat Ticket Evasion

The core of the new initiative is a sophisticated system that will detect “double passes” from ticket counters, alerting passengers to potential violations. Deputy Transport Minister Giorgos Kyranakis emphasized that recent technological upgrades, including the introduction of credit and debit card payment options, have already resulted in an additional one million euros in ticket collections. This notable increase is also attributed to a substantial rise in inspections, which have nearly quintupled this year compared to 2021, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring fair usage of public transport services.

Significant Fleet Expansion and Modernization

Beyond ticketing improvements, Kyranakis announced an ambitious plan to bolster Athens’ bus fleet. By March 2026, the city is set to receive 1,075 new buses. This significant acquisition will include a diverse range of vehicles: one-third will be electric, another third will run on natural gas, and the remaining buses will utilize environmentally friendly diesel technology. These changes, already observed in Thessaloniki, are poised to significantly reduce emissions and elevate the quality of public transport across the region, aligning with broader environmental goals and passenger comfort.

Enhanced Enforcement in Bus Lanes

To address the persistent issue of vehicle violations in dedicated bus lanes, the Ministry is deploying a new system involving cameras and specialized algorithms on buses. This technology, which has undergone successful testing on Attiki Odos, will be expanded to encompass 600 bus lane cameras. The system is designed for rapid identification of offenders, with violation reports promptly sent via gov.gr. Fines for these violations are anticipated to commence as early as next month, signaling a stricter approach to maintaining the efficiency of bus services.

Citizen Engagement Through New Reporting App

In a move to foster greater transparency and responsiveness, the Ministry has also launched the report.oasa.gr app. This innovative platform empowers citizens to report a range of issues, including delays, vehicle malfunctions, and concerns regarding driver behavior. The app has already garnered over 3,000 complaints, with an impressive 70% of these issues having been addressed to date. An analysis of the complaints reveals that buses account for the majority (78%), followed by the metro (7%), and other public transport services, providing valuable data for targeted improvements.

These comprehensive measures underscore Athens’ dedication to creating a more efficient, environmentally friendly, and user-friendly public transportation system. The integration of advanced technology, coupled with a focus on fleet modernization and citizen feedback, positions Athens at the forefront of urban mobility innovation.
