Athens, November 28 – The heart of Athens, Syntagma Square, officially began its festive season yesterday, Thursday, November 27, with the grand illumination of a 19-meter Christmas tree. Mayor Haris Doukas presided over the lively event, which featured music, performances, and a festive atmosphere, despite light rain, drawing crowds of all ages.
Syntagma Square Lights Up with 168,000 Lights
The impressive Christmas tree, sourced responsibly from a farm in Chrysoivitsi, Arcadia, and transported with permission from the local forestry authority, became the centerpiece of the city’s holiday celebrations. Adorned with 168,000 lights and 3,000 meters of sparkling garlands, along with red and gold baubles and illuminated plexiglass ornaments, the tree transformed Syntagma Square into a dazzling spectacle. In total, the square and the tree were decorated with 21,000 meters of garlands.
A Historic Tradition and Modern Festivities
The tradition of a Christmas tree in Athens dates back to 1843, when the first tree was decorated with candles and St. Nicholas-themed ornaments from Russia. This year’s celebration honored that history while embracing modern festivities. The event commenced with a vibrant parade by the Athens Municipal Band, starting at Monastiraki, proceeding along Ermou Street, and culminating at Syntagma Square. The city’s Big Band entertained early arrivals with holiday melodies, setting a joyful tone for the evening.
A parade by the Philharmonic Orchestra, moving from the Ermou fountain to Syntagma Square, further invited attendees to immerse themselves in the music. Celebrated singer Panos Mouzourakis delivered a special live holiday performance, while presenters Krateros Katsoulis and Dora Makrygianni hosted the event. The Children’s Choir from Papagou Primary Schools also participated, adding to the festive spirit, with simultaneous interpretation in Greek Sign Language ensuring accessibility for all.
City-Wide Decorations and Interactive Installations
At 19:30, Mayor Doukas officially illuminated the tree, signaling the start of the holiday season. Beyond Syntagma Square, the festive decorations extended across main thoroughfares, including Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Ermou, and Vasilissis Sofias Avenue. These streets were adorned with LED lights, garlands, and additional Christmas trees, creating a widespread festive ambiance.
Ermou Street featured interactive installations, such as a glowing Santa Claus and a Nutcracker gate, which delighted visitors. Mitropoleos Square hosted a traditional nativity scene, adding a touch of classic Christmas charm to the urban landscape. After the holiday season, the Christmas tree will be donated to the Athens School of Fine Arts, where students will repurpose its wood for various woodworking projects, promoting sustainability.
Christmas Village and Ongoing Celebrations
Athens’ Christmas celebrations continue at Pedion tou Areos, where the regional Christmas Village opened yesterday and is set to run until January 7, 2026. Daily activities at the village are scheduled from 16:30 to 22:00, with extended hours on weekends starting from 10:00. The opening of the village included its own tree lighting ceremony, led by Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, a spectacular light show, and performances by Thodoris Ferris and Onemanshow. Earlier in the day, at 18:00, the street band “Molivenioi Stratiotes” entertained visitors with a repertoire of classic festive tunes.
The comprehensive holiday program in Athens promises a season filled with music, dazzling lights, and interactive experiences across the city, offering both residents and visitors a warm and festive welcome to the Christmas season.
