Athens, May 6 – The historic Peloponnese Railway Station in Athens is entering a new phase of restoration and redevelopment through a three-part plan aimed at transforming the landmark into a cultural and urban regeneration hub. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to preserve railway heritage and reconnect historic infrastructure with contemporary urban life.

A Landmark Transformation Led by GAIAOSE

The project is spearheaded by GAIAOSE, the state-owned company responsible for managing and developing Greece’s railway real estate assets. Located near the central Larissis Station, the Peloponnese Railway Station is recognized as one of the capital’s most significant historic railway landmarks, protected since 1985. It is known for its distinctive deep red roof, stained-glass windows, crystal chandeliers, and a unique triple-domed roof structure combining metal and timber elements.

Phase One: Urgent Protection and Stabilization Completed

The initial phase of the intervention, focusing on urgent protection and structural stabilization works, was successfully completed in early 2026. These works received necessary approvals from the Ministry of Culture and were crucial in safeguarding the building’s structural integrity, preparing the site for subsequent restoration stages.

Phase Two: Comprehensive Restoration Underway

The second phase involves the full restoration of the station and its surrounding area. On April 27, GAIAOSE’s board approved the tender award for a series of specialized studies. These studies will cover architectural, structural, electromechanical, and landscape-related interventions. The submission of these comprehensive studies to the Culture Ministry is anticipated later this year, marking a significant step towards the station’s complete overhaul.

Future Vision: A Multifunctional Cultural Destination

Concurrently, GAIAOSE has initiated a non-binding expression of interest process. This process aims to attract investment proposals for the future utilization of the station and the broader area. The overarching vision for the Peloponnese Railway Station is to establish it as a multifunctional destination, primarily centered on culture and mild urban uses. Crucially, this redevelopment will be executed while meticulously preserving the building’s historic identity.

“The Peloponnese Railway Station is a unique historical and architectural landmark for Athens,” stated Panagiotis Balomenos, CEO of GAIAOSE, emphasizing the significance of this revitalization project for the city.

The deadline for submitting investment proposals is June 12, indicating a proactive approach to securing the necessary partnerships and funding for the station’s long-term future.

This ambitious project underscores Athens’ commitment to cultural development and urban regeneration, transforming a historic railway asset into a vibrant hub for both residents and visitors.
