Athens, Georgia – Birdies, a local market, lunch counter, and coffee shop located on Prince Avenue, has announced its impending closure. The establishment, which opened its doors in November 2023, will cease operations on December 28th, according to an Instagram post made by the owner on Sunday.
Financial Struggles Lead to Closure
Kirsten Hindes, owner of Birdies, stated in the Instagram announcement that the business has “barely kept our head above water these past two years, and there is no pathway to profitability in this current climate of rising costs and economic uncertainty.” This sentiment echoes concerns previously raised by other local businesses in Athens.
A Community Hub Since 2023
Since its inception, Birdies has been recognized for its unique offerings, described as a British-inspired gourmet market, deli, and coffee bar. It quickly became a popular spot for locals and visitors, earning awards from both The Red & Black and The Flagpole for its contributions to the Athens community.
The market also engaged with the community by offering specialized classes and events, aiming to “bring customers into its vision.”
Call for Community Support in Final Weeks
In the closure announcement, Birdies appealed to its patrons for support during its final weeks of operation. “We are committed to working out the rest of the month at full capacity, and hope that you will consider us as a holiday shopping and dining destination,” the post read. The owner emphasized that additional sales in this period are crucial for supporting the staff and settling outstanding bills.
A staff member confirmed the closure to The Red & Black via phone.
Part of a Larger Trend in Athens
Birdies’ closure follows closely on the heels of another Athens establishment, Buvez, a coffee shop and music venue in the Boulevard area. Buvez’s closure became public just over a week prior, with its baristas also attributing the decision to rising operating costs and tariffs.
The Red & Black previously reported on Buvez’s impending closure, noting that employees were informed on a Monday, with barista Haley Harrison specifically citing “high operating costs and recent coffee tariffs as the main reasons for closing.”
Impact on the Local Economy
The consecutive closures of popular local businesses like Birdies and Buvez highlight a challenging economic environment for small enterprises in Athens. Rising inflation, increased supply costs, and economic uncertainties are creating significant hurdles for businesses striving to maintain profitability and sustain their operations.
The loss of these establishments not only affects their owners and employees but also diminishes the vibrant local business landscape that contributes to Athens’ unique character.
The community’s response to Birdies’ final weeks will be critical in assisting the staff and ensuring a smooth transition for the business as it prepares to close its doors permanently at the end of December.
