With significant relief and a sense of responsibility, the Municipality of North Corfu has informed citizens about the successful outcome of the search for 87-year-old John Eagles, who had been missing since Wednesday, April 29, in the Klimatia area.
Extensive Search Operation in Klimatia
The entire operation, involving the immediate mobilization of authorities and volunteer organizations, was conducted under the exemplary guidance of Major General Dimitrios Voulgaris, General Regional Police Director of the Ionian Islands. Upon locating the missing person, the search and rescue operation concluded. The involved bodies expressed their satisfaction with the positive result, which was achieved through the cooperation of authorities, volunteers, and the local community.
The Municipality wishes to publicly commend the contribution of two members of the Hellenic Police: Nikos Stathakis (drone operator) and Georgios Baladimas (search dog handler). These officers, beyond their professionalism, demonstrated exceptional self-sacrifice, operating continuously for almost three 24-hour periods under adverse weather conditions and frequent rainfall, proving that the protection of human life is the highest duty.
Mayor’s Statement and Community Gratitude
George Macheimaris, Mayor of North Corfu, stated, “The happy outcome of this adventure fills us with relief. As Mayor, I feel the need to warmly thank the Hellenic Police, the Fire Department, EKAV (National Center for Emergency Medical Aid), the Civil Protection of our Municipality, the community of Klimatia, as well as all the volunteer organizations and the local community that mobilized immediately. The excellent cooperation of all forces under difficult conditions serves as a model for our region. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.”
The successful search and rescue operation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between local authorities and volunteer groups in critical situations. The prompt response and dedication of all involved ensured the safe return of Mr. Eagles to his family.
This incident also underscores the importance of community vigilance and the role of specialized units, such as drone operators and search dog handlers, in complex search operations, especially when facing challenging environmental conditions.
