Corfu warns olive growers of fruit fly surge after grove inspections

Inspectors from the Directorate of Agricultural Economy in the Regional Unit of Corfu visited local olive groves on the morning of 30 September 2025 and then issued a safety notice. They warn that olive fruit fly numbers are climbing quickly in parts of the island, putting the upcoming harvest at risk unless preventive steps start now.

Where is infestation highest in Corfu?

The agency says pressure is uneven across the island:

  • Coastal and semi-mountainous zones without visible drought stress show high infestation.
  • Plains and other semi- to mountainous areas that faced drought show early egg-laying and currently lower infestation, which can rise fast.

Why is the risk rising now?

Why now? Recent high humidity, rainfall and suitable temperatures create ideal conditions for the olive fruit fly to reproduce, the service notes. These conditions have already grown the pest population and will likely push it higher if the weather pattern continues.

What should olive growers do immediately?

Depending on each grove’s location and current pressure, officials suggest considering cover sprays or bait sprays carried out by the producer, after consulting a licensed agronomist. Pay close attention to:

  • Product selection: use only approved products and follow the label exactly.
  • Pre-harvest interval (PHI): strictly observe the waiting time between spraying and harvest.
  • Residue risk: using non-approved products or ignoring PHIs can leave residues in olives and oil and lead to penalties after laboratory checks.

Who issued the advisory?

The notice comes from the Directorate of Agricultural Economy (Olive Fruit Fly Control Program) of the Regional Unit of Corfu after field inspections. The public summary did not include exact inspection dates.

Are copper products useful now?

The agency reminds growers that copper-based products, used according to the label, help prevent olive diseases (such as fungal issues and canker) and can repel egg-laying.

Where to find more information?

Growers can contact the Directorate of Agricultural Economy in Corfu for guidance at +30 2661 364711. Local agronomists can advise on the right treatment window and formulation for each micro-area.

What does this mean for the community?

Olives and oil sit at the heart of Corfu’s rural economy. Acting quickly and by the rules can limit losses in quality and yield while protecting consumer safety. Residents may also see advisory updates in the coming days as weather and trap counts change.

Data notes

The public note did not include neighborhood-level maps, trap counts or a spraying calendar. This summary reflects the official guidance available at the time of publication.
