The Corfu Port Authority S.A. has joined ARGONAUT, a cross-border effort under Interreg VI-A Greece-Italy 2021-2027 that pushes for cleaner shipping and more eco-friendly maritime tourism. The first meeting was held in Taranto, Italy, earlier this week. It formally launched a program that should modernize port facilities and raise the international profile of both Corfu and Greece.
How will the project impact Corfu?
ARGONAUT tackles environmental, economic and social pressures linked to nautical tourism across the Greek-Italian sea region. In Corfu, within the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian, the priorities are clear: ease seasonal crowding at coastal zones and marinas, cut emissions from ships at berth, and lift service standards for visitors and residents.
What will residents gain?
Planned upgrades focus on cleaner day-to-day operations and smarter navigation. What does that look like for people who live or work near the port? Quieter port calls with fewer fumes, safer traffic thanks to real-time routing tools, and new training chances for local maritime crews. Taken together, these changes can help spread tourism across the year and ease the summer squeeze on the waterfront.
What actions are planned under ARGONAUT?
- Adriatic Maritime Route Planner: a digital, AI-assisted platform to suggest safer, greener routes in real time.
- Green pilot ports: upgrades in Gallipoli, Corfu and Patras, such as electric charging points for boats.
- ARGONAUT Network: a cross-border forum to share practical know-how in nautical tourism.
- Training programs: theory and hands-on courses in sustainable navigation and port management.
Who participated in the launch?
At the kick-off in Taranto, Corfu Port CEO Dimitris Apergis met with Gianfranco Gadaleta, who coordinates the Interreg Greece-Italy Joint Secretariat, and Dimitris Katsaros, secretary general of the Decentralized Administration of the Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian. Italian partners lead the coordination and the Route Planner, and teams from Puglia and the municipality of Gallipoli add their know-how. In Greece, the Corfu port draws on experience from European projects in digital tools and green mobility, while the Port Authority of Patras will pilot green technologies.
When will changes be visible?
The project is now underway, with preparatory work following Tuesday’s meeting. Specific timelines, budgets and milestones were not shared in the source and will be announced by the partners. So when will you notice a difference? Expect gradual updates as new infrastructure and digital tools appear at the Corfu port.
