On 8 October, for World Dyslexia Day, the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontia Islands will light up the Old Town Hall (San Giacomo) and the Marasleio Mansion in turquoise. A small change in color, right in the center of Corfu Town, to bring a global awareness effort closer to home.

Why is Corfu lit in turquoise today?

World Dyslexia Day raises awareness of a common yet often ‘invisible’ learning difference that affects at least 10% of people worldwide. The turquoise glow is a clear signal: early identification and the right support can reshape school experiences and lower everyday barriers for children and adults with dyslexia.

Where will the landmarks be illuminated?

The Old Town Hall (known locally as San Giacomo) and the historic Marasleio Mansion will be lit in turquoise in Corfu Town. These central spots were chosen to be easy to see and to get residents and visitors talking.

How did local authorities respond?

The municipality is taking part in the international ‘United for Dyslexia’ campaign and is coordinating the symbolic lighting here. This action fits with ongoing work to build inclusive education and raise public awareness across the island’s communities.

Who coordinates the campaign?

The initiative is coordinated by DISFAM (Dyslexia and Family) together with the International Observatory for Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties (OIDEA), which encourage cities worldwide to light landmarks in turquoise and share practical resources.

What does this mean for the city?

For Corfu, the lighting is an open invitation to talk about dyslexia at home, in schools, and at work. Because dyslexia is often identified late, many learners meet obstacles they could avoid and may disengage. Awareness days prompt families to seek screening sooner, help teachers adjust their methods, and remind employers to notice diverse strengths.

Where to find more information?

Residents can find background materials and guidance at: www.disfam.org/8oct. The page explains what dyslexia is, offers practical support tips, and outlines the global campaign.

What to expect next?

The lighting is planned for today, 8 October 2025. No exact switch-on time was included in the source and it may still be confirmed.
